View Full Version : DvD Shrink versus DVD Decrypter question

I'm a newbie, playing around with settings. I've managed to burn a few back-ups, and I'm now looking to understand more.

I decided to try ripping the same disk times, using the 2 progs named.

DVD Decrypter generated 24 files occupying 5.98GB. DVD Shrink (set to no comression) however only generated 20 files and 5.56 Gb.

Three of the "missing" files are _0_VOB files which I believe may be menus, and are 0 byte files. The fourth however is a 02_06_VOB which should be a 936Mb file.

On looking closer, the main move file 01_01_VOB is 886 Mb on DVD Decrypter, and 530 Mb on DVD Shrink. Most of the "extras" VOBs are the same size, but 02_04_VOB is 14Mb on DVD Decrypter, and 1.073 Mb on DVD Shrink. In this case, the DVD Decryptter VOB only generates 21 secs of video, while the DVD Shrink one carries on past the 21 sec point.

My first question is. Is it likely that I am doing something wrong, or is this typical.

If it is typical, which prog would the experts suggest I use. Either of these, or an other one? My end requirement is to get the optimum quality backup I can. Sometimes I will want menus etc, other times I will settle for main movie only. I am not over concerned with speed of rip, or usability, as I am reasonably computer literate (but not yet on DVD).

Many thanks

These are two different programs. DVD Decrypter is used to copy an encrypted commercial DVD to the hard drive, which is impossible to do using regular means such as Windows Explorer. Until you learn more, I suggest ripping in File mode. If the original DVD is a single-layer disc (DVD-5), you just burn the output on a recordable disc. DVD Decrypter can burn automatically if Nero is installed on the same PC.

DVD Shink is used to compress dual-layer DVD so it would fit onto one DVDR. First, you rip the original to HDD with DVD Decrypter, then compress it with DVD Shrink, and then burn.

If the original DVD is a recordable, it means it won't be encrypted, and therefore you can just copy all the files to HDD and/or burn a copy without using either software.

Yes I appreciate they are different programs, but like many progs, there is some common ground.

What I was doing here was testing DVD Shrink with No Compression against DVD Decrypter. I wasn't expecting identicle results, but I was expecting similar results.

What I don't understand is how there are three "missing" files (_0_VOB files which I believe may be menus, and 0 bytes). The fourth misisng file is a 02_06_VOB which should be a 936Mb file.

This doesn't make sense to me. Since DVD Shrink was set to "No Compression", results should have been similar. AT this atage, ALl I'm interested in is ripping. I'll burn later

DVDDecrypter supports both a file ripping mode and an IFO ripping mode. If I'm not mistaken, ripping in DVDShrink is always the equivalent of IFO mode.

If you're comparing DVDDecrypter's file mode to DVDShrink (IFO mode) I would expect you might see different results. In effect, with DVDShrink you'll only get things that are referenced in the IFOs (after all, DVDShrink *always* fully processes the DVD, even with no compression). With DVDDrypter in file mode, you'll get a copy of every file sector on the DVD.

Ideally, with a DVD that's well authored (and therefore doesn't contain any garbage), the two modes should produce very similar results, but as we're coming to realize many DVDs aren't really very well authored.

Even if you compare IFO mode to IFO mode, you may see small differences (the handling of zero-byte files for example). They are different programs and their implementations are most certainly diffferent.

Thanks

That certainly excplains why the 0 byte files don't appear, but I'd have thought that the movie files would be closer in size.

Guess I should always use DVD Decrypter to rip, it seems to give most flexibility as to what to do next.

Thanks anyway

On the same note:

I use DVD Shrink to rip my encrypted DVD's and it seems to work fine.
For that reason, I no longer use DVD Decrypter at all. Am I losing something by doing it that way?

Hi there

I use DVD Shrink aswell and no I don`t think were missing out on anything. I like Shrink way.... better than Decrypter. I only use Decrypter to burn my image file :D

I use DVDShrink to copy DVD to HDD with Re-Author option. It's better to encode VOB to AVI. There are 3 type of files; Main/Menu/Extra.
