Sony released the DRU500A firmware 2.1A (http://sony.storagesupport.com/dvdrw/dru500adwn.htm) upgrade:
* allows your Dual RW drive to record at 4X on 4X compatible DVD-/+R media.
* improves reading and writing performance and reliability.
* reduces vibration noise for the discs with unbalance or eccentricity.
* improves audio playback on written discs with stand alone systems.
* improves reading and writing performance with 8cm DVD-R/RW.
and,
* increases readability with Recordable Double Layer Disc.

Addendum.
Works fine.
Didn't test the last 'feature', due to lack of recordable double layer disc...

I'm unable to install the firmware. When I run the program it restarts my computer and it detects my sony dru500a just fine. But when I click the Start button nothings happens. With older firmware versions it started a progress bar. And after 40 secs my drive was updated.

Anyone have a solution?

I followed the installation instructions to the letter.

greetz,

Just installed it on my XP SP1 machine, and did not have a problem.

Check the instructions (http://sony.storagesupport.com/dvdrw/downloads/500FW21a/Instruction/500Aupdate.html).

And be patient; it may seem to take forever...

It doesn't work. I even can't seem to change back to version 2.0f.

Plus my burner isn't burning like it should. The buffer empties all the time. So burning a disc takes forever.

thx anyway.

If your buffer empties, you probably don't have DMA enabled on your controller.

People, use the windows task manager (w2k/xp).

It shows a nice green bar that represents CPU usage. To the keen eye, it reveals worms, spyware and that your dvd burning shouldnt take 100% CPU.

One of the most amusing comments I read last week was some guy ranting about a new game and how it takes 100% CPU during play on his fabulous 2.5GHz P4. With his logic, only the minimum spec PC takes 100% and faster PC's need increasingly less power :D
