I was trying to encode a movie to VCD format so that I may have a backup of a DVD that I own.
The exact error message says "Access violation at address 00404FF6 in module 'DVD2SVCD.exe'. Read of address 000002C8.
Apparently it occurred while trying to encode audio.

Hi,
after being away from SVCD-creation (due to DVD burner :) I wanted to give the newest DVD2SVCD/D2SRoBa combo a try (for a friend of mine w/o DVD player)...
So not knowing the meaning of all those buttons I decided to go for 3 CDs, english and german subtitles as well as english and german audio, and CD changes at manually chosen frames...
And I wanted the german audio at 192kbps and the english with 160kbps
-- maybe THIS was causing the crash because I also had "audio after video" checked, which auto-adjusts the audio bitrate as I learned meanwhile?
...or because I was setting the CD-change positions manually?
As You can see in the log, the 2 audio-streams for the first CD were 'generated' sucessfully (or 'postponed' to be more precise...)
where the crash happened was at the beginnig of the second CD...
any help appreciated!

guru1968, were you able to preview ok? Did you by any chance install ffdshow-20040514? I ask because I had a problem the other day with preview after installing it. I think the problem was specific to my machine, but did want to check with you about it.
guru1968

Well, I indeed do have ffdshow installed -- not sure about the version though, think it's 20040304...
but the preview--if you mean the preview inside the frame-selection window--did work very well!
But, the crash happend while AUDIO-encoding -- I thought ffdshow only contains video codecs!? Or does this interfere with DVD2SVCD anyhow?
guru
p.s.
If You suggest to remove ffdshow and try again, I could do so tomorrow evening...
btw: exactly the same error at the same addresses if audio is to be encoded right away i.s.o. after video...

There was another report of a crash when using the function of D2SRoBa to encode audio after video instead of letting D2S do it. Uncheck that option in D2SRoBa and let us know if that solves the problem. We can ask tylo to look into it if so.

<sigh> Well it pays to read the fine print, yes? Still, running out of space should be handled a bit better than an access violation if indeed that is what caused the problem.

@DDogg: That's what I meant by my [edit] comments: it does not matter whether audio is coded before or after video, this crash always happenes at exactly the same addresses!
@ralfthedog,DDogg: sorry, I should have mentioned this: I also noticed that I was running low and was freeing up diskspace while D2S was busy extracting the audio -- If I didn't do that it already had failed extracting the audio tracks! When it came to my second try (audio BEFORE video), I used a different drive with more than 5Gig of free space and the same Access Violation occured!

To guru1968,
I think this may have to be an bug with frame selection. I experienced the same access violation when I used frame selection to separate the CDs. When I did not use frame selection and let DVD2SVCD partition the CDs wherever it happened the error did not occur. Can you verify this?
Anyway I shall start another thread as I seem to locate the culprit?

...I was busy manually finishing this project (Kill Bill Jap. + German Audio), but this is done now (more or less)!
Well - IF it really is related to the manual frame selection, than the whole D2S package renders useless!
No use if I cannot select the CD-change position, kind of crappy when the playback stops in the middle of a scene, waiting for the next CD... :(
But when I have the time I can verify this by unchecking that option!
I only can say that I used different settings with different amounts of CDs (2 and 3), even different versions of D2S, also I do NOT use D2SRoBa, only the pure D2S...
ALWAYS the same result:
Access Violation after audio-encoding of the first CD!
What I also discovered was that resuming the SVCD-authoring will give you another access violation
-- as the whole resuming does not really is that stable (it corrupts the original settings every now and then)!
-----
This may sound a bit critical, but the D2S package never worked really satisfactory for me! I really wanted to give it another try this time with the newest version, with no luck at all...
Believe it or not - I spent days and days experimenting with different settings, always failing :(
e.g. I did the audio manually and resumed after the audio which also did not give me the desired results (cce hangup) and so on, and so on...
MAYBE there are a few people here where D2S really deliveres what they need and want, maybe I am expecting too much, maybe my computer is too old and slow, maybe... who knows?
-- I also think that this AutoIt scripting does not really work well on my pc, e.g. once I tried the Procoder codec: this failed as well (in the Procoder window only the progress-time was updated, but not the preview window... still showing the first frame forever)
I even think that D2S sets wrong cut-points for audio (it cuts the audio BEFORE the last frame of a CD, not AFTER it)
Also the positioning data for permanent subtitles is not really correct, if you directly compare it with the original (Y-position is way too small)...
I could continue this list for a while, but I will stop here... the author will anyway not notice this post :(
-- not to be misundastood -- read this post as kind of constructive critic, at least this it what it was meant to be...
have fun :)

How is your hardware conditions ?
Many times, crash problem comes from hardware failure.
Check:
Ram, cpu temp, enough psu watts, etc.
guru1968
24th May 2004, 16:29
well, when I do all those steps according to the log-file, everything is okay...
And this access violation occures always at the very same position, no matter if the pc ran for days, came from a fresh boot or even was powered-off before...
I also have a stand-alone ventilator close to the PC, additionally cooling the inner parts; all this does not seem to influence D2S' behavior!
Okay my PC is not the strongest anymore--compared with the newer ones, but an AMD Athlon 1.333GHz with 512MB RAM should be enough to do this little conversion!
Only strange, though this frame selection feature is not that new, there are popping up these kind of errors but now and not long ago???
Either this feature was not used at all, or it really worked in the first implementations...
[okay - the drawback of this feature is that one has to wait until the .d2v project is finished; than the frames can be selected and after this the pc does not need any further attention -- whereas w/o frame-selection the PC directly after pressing <GO> can be left alone]

I don't know if this is the way to resolve the problem, but at least it has worked for me.
I would manually rip the video segments into different folders and then process the folders separately and it seems to work.
For example, if I wanted to convert the 30 chapters of Titanic into 3 CDs, I can separate the ripping of say chapters 1-10, 11-20 and 21-30 into separate folders and then use DVD2SVCD to process each segment of video or use the batch feature if you like. Well this technique assumes you want to cut at chapters. I hope this helps.
guru1968
27th May 2004, 13:49
okay, that would kind of work...
BUT: this still is a bug and needs to be solved by the only one who hast the knowledge and the power to do so, namely the author of DVD2SVCD himself!

:) I was experiencing exactly the same problem of 'access violation' during the audio encoding step. I had the same problem either with DVD2SVCD ver. 1.2.1 build 3 or DVD2SVCD ver. 1.2.2 build 1.
After few trials I suspected that the installation of DVD2SVCD was somewere conflicting with the previously installed Gordian Knot (*) bundle.
I uninstalled DVD2SVCD and Gordian Knot, cleaned my system (directories - registers) and reinstalled D2S122B1.zip.
NOW IT WORKS PERFECTLY
