Hey,
I'm a noob trying to back-up my first dvd for my gf. Its in spanish and so I need the english subtitles. I used r4r with gordian knot, VOBSub, and all the other utilities included in the Gordian knot rippack. The first time I did it I was really happy(I used the DivX 5 guide). I got good quality video, subtitles and all when I played it from the HD in WMP9. However, after burning the .avi file to a TDK 700MB cd-r, I lost the subtitles. They disappeared after using EasyCD Creator 5.1, but I got no error message during the writing process. They even disappeared from the HD file of the movie.

Also, in DivX, the cd-r and HD file take about 5 minutes to start playing, again without the subtitles. Additionally in DivX, I cannot fast-forward to another scene; the movie just returns to the beginning. Do I need to configure VOBSub or something else? Should I try the encoding without R4R? I tried uninstalling EasyCD Creator and using Nero 6 to burn the .avi but I get an error at about 50% of the writing process. I have no idea what to do. I have been searching all over the web and this GREAT site for 8 days now. Please help.

Hello and welcome to the forum.

It sounds as if you only made external subtitles. That is, they were never burned into the video. So after you burned the CD without the subs, then no more subs. So what you have to do is make sure that when you create to .avs to feed into the encoder (VDubMod) that you also include the subs. In File->Save And Encode, in GKnot, under Subtitles, you have to check "Select VobSub Files" and then pick them (the idx will be fine). Then the subs should be encoded, or burned, onto the video.

But if you prefer to have the external subs, you'll have to include the idx and sub files on the CD-R, and whatever computer they're played on should have VobSub installed.

I don't know why the movie takes so long to start playing. Have you tried a different player? You might try BSPlayer, MPC, or Zoom Player. You can find them in the downloads section of this site.

Also, if you're having trouble, you might try out AutoGK for even greater ease of use.
