View Full Version : When you use IVTC...

I've got this movie with has a few scenes with interlaced lines when i use Force Film in DVD2AVI, i was wondering if that happens a lot and why it happens?

So i decided to use IVTC on the whole movie to fix those scenes, but my main problem seems to be that the CreditsStart is at the wrong place when i encode it. The movie is 96m22s long and it starts to get real blocky at 72m46s. The credits SHOULD be at 90m56s.
I set the CreditsStart at 163538 of the total 173293 frames.

I've encoded the movie before also using IVTC and i didn't have the problem then. So i find it really weird that it doesn't work right now. The things i have changed since then are:
- a different (bigger) audio file
- i changed the Xvid settings from VHQ mode: 1 Mode Decision to 4 Wide search. And i disabled trellis R-D quantisation (at debug tab).
- i set resizing method from neutral bicubic to lanczos.

I don't think i changed anything else and I didn't tough the CreditsStart

EDIT: I noticed that encoding the movie went very fast ~19fps. That can't be normal with IVTC and Xvid Wide Search. That can't be normal. In my previous try with Xvid Mode Decision i only got ~17fps.
I just started another encoding session and it seems to go A LOT slower, 8fps. That's more realistic and I think it will not screw up this time.

Here's the log:

Hi Slogra-

i was wondering if that happens a lot and why it happens?

It's happened to me more times than I'd care to remember. Even though the general rule is that if the movie shows as more than 95% Film in DVD2AVI that you're safe in using Force Film, I've seen many cases of interlaced frames when the percentage is even greater than 99% Film. If you open the .d2v, you'll see the common Film pattern of 0 1 2 3 0 1 2 3.... If you're using the new DVD2AVIdg, then there's a 2-number sequence, so it might go 10 11 12 13 10 11 12 13... Ignore the first number of the 2-number sequence. But sometimes (often), parts will be encoded as interlaced. In those cases you'll see 2 2 2 2 2..., or 0 0 0 0 0... Those parts are usually at black frames where it doesn't make any difference. But if they occur during some active video, then that's where you'll get some interlacing and/or jerkiness. One way around that, as you know, is to make the .d2v for 29.97fps (No Field Operation) and then to apply IVTC. And if there aren't too many of those interlaced frames, you might keep the Force Film (23.976fps) .d2v and then put on FieldDeinterlace(Full=False,Blend=False) to clean up those few interlaced frames. You may have to tweak the threshold to make sure good frames don't get deinterlaced.

As for getting the wrong End Credits start, either you didn't do as you said you did, or there's a bug in the latest GKnot, because the log says:

CreditsStart: 130830

You said that you started them at frame number 163538. 163538x0.8=130830. If GKnot is working correctly, it looks as if the Credits start was chosen from the IVTC'd .avs or the Force Filmed .d2v. Are you sure you didn't keep the same frame number from your first try (Force Film) when you did it again with no Force Film and with IVTC?

I don't think i changed anything else and I didn't tough the CreditsStart

You mean "touch" and not "tough", right? Are you saying that you used the same Credits start for both encodes? If so, there's your mistake.

I guess i must've accidently changed the creditsstart and clicked the button or something... Or maybe GordianKnot didn't close as it should and didn't save the creditsstart after the "manual" IVTC encoding. And loaded the CreditsStart from the forcefilm version next time i started it, where the creditsstart was at another place.
I don't really remember very well cause i usually start an encode before i go to sleep and look at it very early in the morning so i might not have been as awake as i should be ;) .
Anyway, it doesn't really matter cause this time the movie came out right with the CreditsStart at the right point :) .

About the force film of dvd2avi: the interlacing happened at a very high action scene, so maybe dvd2avi got confused by it. There are also quite a few black scenes in the movie.

And yes i meant touch :D
