I have an older game for win 95/98. Unfortunatelly I've Win XP installed now. Is there a win 95/98 emulator for XP that would enable me to install and run such a game?
right click on the main executable of the game, click the 'compatibility' tab, then choose your settings. a new shortcut will be created, use it to run the game. it might work, although it's far from 100% success rate.
another option is to try vmware, and install win95/98 inside it, although it will be considerably slower than your real machine (your milage may vary, i'd say 20% - 85%, depending on the material, i.e. directx game, plain solitair, etc).
if speed is not an issue (i.e. you have a really fast computer or the game is not about high fps, or it's an old dos game) you can try bochs which is like vmware (full pc emulation) but even slower as it emulate each cpu instruction (while vmware runs the instructions directly on your cpu).
another option is to try dosbox, which is a dos emulator.
give us more details about your app/game, and we might give u better answers.
cheers.

Thanks a million,
It's quite a simpe Disney's game (Toy Sory) for kids. I can't give more details for it now, but requirements are low, and I have Barton 2500@3200 with 512 MB and Radeon 9200, so speed is not object.
I can't even install it, as the system connot see files to be installed, and which certainly are on the CD. I guess I can copy the CD with Clone CD onto my harddisk, and then try doing the change you suggest?
i don't think it's a compatibility issue. imho, it's a cd issue. if the files are supposed to be there, but u can't see them then the cd might be corrupted (try nero cd speed, it might help).
also, i don't think clone-cd will help, but it might worth a try. the solutions i suggested eariler were about an incompatible application (which is already installed).
if it's a really old game (i think there's more than 1 toy-story game around) it might be hanging around as 'abandonware' (downloadable from the net), although with disney's ever-extending copyright coverage, i highly doubt it.
good luck though, and post your experienca back here.
cheers.

The files are there. I found them, and then I successfully installed the game on my PC with win98 at the office. It's just that the install program doesn't see them when the actual installing begins (after all this destination folder and country selection and other initial dialogue is finished). It doesn' say they are corrupted or sth, but it says they are not phisically on the disc.
I guessed it must be system incompatibility, when I tried to install a demo of another game that was on the same CD-rom. Then the information appeared that this demo is for 95/98 and the system is XP. So I guessed the same problem must be with the other game.

All I had time for yesterday was to fiddle with the compatibility settings. Obviously, it didn't work. I'll try the other options today or over the weekend

It might be your cd-rom. If you have an old cd-rom lying around try installing the game with it.
.
I once tried to install a game (4years old) on my new pc, but kept having problems and crashes. Read some where to use an old cd-rom and it worked. Game installed and played flawlessly with old drive. Why? I have no idea.

My 2cents.

Thanks mudda_t,
The only thing that doesn't fit with this is that I don't have problems with say, copying files into the hard drive with Clone CD for instance. But again, when I try to install the game from the harddisk i come across the same problem. The installation program cannot find them on the harddrive.
Anyway, if I get an old CD-rom I'll give it a try.

you can try looking at www.ntcompatible at their list to see what people have done to make their games work. however, they do not have anything listed for toy story.

BTW.. i have some old games like virtua cop 2 and pandemonium 2 that dont run on my pc. they say it needs a 3dfx card or something.
is there any way i can emulate these games to run on my system?
i have an ati radeon 9600 pro.

hmm, this almost brings tears to my eyes ;) my 1st ever 3d card was a monster 3dfx voodoo 1 (passthrugh card). tomb raider 1 and quake 1 ran like champs in 640x480 on my 486 dx4 100Mhz ;)
anyway, to the point, in those early days, there was an n64 emulator called ultrahle. and it was programmed to use 3dfx cards only. so some smart guys wrote a d3d wrapper that had the glide api (glide was 3dfx propriatry 3d api, and it was pretty good), and would use 3d3 underneath (prob dx 5 or 6).
here are some links:

Troubleshooting glide wrapper (http://www.glideunderground.com/articles/Article_TroubleShooting.html)
eVoodoo (glide wrapper) (http://www.voodoofiles.com/5834)
GlideOS (another glide wrapper) (http://www.glidos.net/)
enjoy ;)
