Help with shrink???????

Every dvd i have backed up has some sections of the movie that the video starts to break up and the sound cuts out. Ive burnt 4 so far. I have a 4x burner that comes with a dell (not sure the brand). I am using dvd shrink and nero to decrypt,shrink and burn. I have tried decryptor but when it decrypts and i try to use shrink to shorten it an error message pops up. I have used phillips and memorex dvd+r and rw. Do you have any idea why i am getting bad spots in the video and audio. Also when i shrink it i am keeping it above 70%. One was at 90% and still did the same thing.

It sounds like a media problem. Do other backup methods work fine with the same media and player? If you don't know, try using DVD Decrypter to backup an original DVD-5 disc, since it will burn on a DVD-R without any compression required.

I dont understand why i keep getting an error message with shrink when i use decryptor. I have read that decryptor is the better software. I dont think i have a dvd 5 disc to back up.

You must decrypt in file mode in dvd decrypter, and select all files!

But the sound squeeking and image pixelating is a media problem. Try to keep the discs clean of fingerprints and lint before (and after) you burn them. And find out what the burner is that came with the DELL, firmware updates to dvd-burners are VERY IMPORTANT.

The problem may not be media but the standalone DVD player. I have had problems as you described with an older Sony that did not like DVD backups. Have you tried the discs in a different player?

I only have the one player. I think the burner is a nec. I burnt scary movie 3 with decrypt and shrink and it burnt this time with no error message. I have watched the first 20 minutes and have no probs so far. With the others they messed up at different points. The last samaria was at the end only.

Try to just use shrink and leave decryptor alone.
I have run into problums when I use both.
Shrink under most circumstances doesn't need a seperate app.

The NEC 2500 desperately needs firmware updates from what I've read on the net. Some old firmware causes at least Ritek discs to burn poorly and the more recent firmware helps alot.

what is the compression on shrink saying it is? I have found that shrink starts to pixelate below 60% compression.

But for the samurai disc that was in almost all likelyhood a bad disc.

Heres what I did for samurai and had no probs.

this is all on an xp-pro system with 512 mb memory.

1*-use shrink to reauthor the movie to videots and audiosts folders on a hard drive( Very Important. place the movie on a drive with the opposite ide channel than your dvd burner)( if your burner is on IDE 1 , then burn to a folder on a drive on IDE2) this keeps the corruption down to almost non exsistant.


2*- Check the movie on the hard drive to make sure its ok.

3*- burn to a disc using whatever software you want but only burn at the recomended speed of the disc.


4*- always, always, always use nice grade disc. For me genuine ritek, verbatum and ty disc work great.


I tried to do a whole disc backup of samurai but pixelation and quality were bad( had way to much compression)

I burnt gothika at 85% and still had bad spots. Just the other day i did scary movie 3 with decryptor and shirnk and it worked perfect. So maybe using shrink and nero was my problem. I will try it again and post the results. Thanks for the help.

Hi there

I use Shrink to rip to the hard drive then I use Imgtool to create an image file then I burn it to a Maxell DVD+R and I have never had a problem so far. I also have a XP Pro system with 512ram. Try using Shrink to rip it to the hard drive then use Imgtool and then use Decrypter to burn the ISO file try that it work fine for me no problems with The last Samari well at least you know it`s not the movie:D

You never mentioned what type of media you are using. It sounds to me like you were burning to fast. Try slowing your burns to 2x with the same media and post back.

And make sure you follow Joergen's firmware advice and vaylon's quality media advice.

i have been using philips at 1x. I have tried another listed in the first post at 4x with no difference. I burnt paycheck last night and watched about 10 minutes of it with no probs. Will let you know when i see the rest.
