This is a bit OT perhaps but seemed to be the best group
Planning to set up a PVR of sorts and do time shifting with an old comp. It will be a Athlon XP (256k cache) 1900mhz i.e. around 2400+ (not 1900+!) at 150 FSB with 512mb RAM. Going to get a Ati All in Wonder 9200. HD will be a 60gb I think. Any recommendations on what codecs to use and res etc? It's not feasible to do loseless for various reasons that should be obvious and I think even MJPEG is out. I would like to capture to MPEG4 or similar directly. Obviously it's real time so 2 pass, bidirectonal and GMC are out. Anything else that I shouldn't try. Think it's feasable? Since it's a fairly small TV (21 inch) absolute best quality is not really that important but I'll obviously like decent quality. What resolutions, settings, etc do you recommend and what codec? I know XviD is the best MPEG4 codec for high quality two pass encoding but considerations here are obviously totally different and are mainly a speed/quality/size tradeoff. I'm wondering if Nero (not sure if this could do real time tho) or something might be better? Bear in mind encoding and decoding speed matter for obvious reasons altho I could potentially set it up using two different codecs. Doesn't have to be MPEG4 tho, welcome to hear other suggestions WMP, RM whatever you think might interest me.
Alternatively, I'm wondering whether it might be better to use MPEG2 or something similar, not as complex as MPEG4 even though it'll mean large file sizes. Reencoding to MPEG4 or similar with 2 pass etc encoding could be carried out, when necessary despite the obvious quality loss.
Haven't touched audio but it's obviously a consideration. Need something simple, probably MPEG layer III or II, I would expect. I would prefer to maintain as stereo (or joint stereo). Bit rates & codecs + settings etc recommendations for optimal speed/quality/size.
All ideas are welcome. It's obviously going to be a lot of trial and error but would really like to hear ideas on what might work...
Forgot to add, source will mainly be normal (non HDTV) satellite (& I understand most of the channels are low res too) analog out to S-video. Although TV tuner will also be used. All will be PAL.
