Hi video boffins :)
2 quick qestions
1. I hope this doesnt sound like too daft a question but can D2Sroba be used with DVD2SVCD in AVI to SVCD mode?
Im a newbie and just geting to grips with this vast topic.. I have some of my movies already ripped with Xvid (with a view to putting multiple movies onto a DVD with TMpg Author), if I wanted to put them into SVCD format can I use D2Sroba to get the best quality transfer from Xvid?
If so, how do I set it up plz?
2. If not, are there any programs/plugins that can do this?
Cheers!
Marcus
You can indeed use D2SRoBa with AVI2SVCD.
Launch DVD2SVCD, go into the Misc tab and select AVI input and SVCD ouput.
Close down DVD2SVCD and launch D2SRoBa. Configure it appropriately, ie Set the CD size to 4464/number of films per disc** and choose 1 disc for the output and hit Go. It will launch DVD2SVCD in AVI2SVCD mode. Continue as normal from there. Tip - make sure the Downsample checkbox in the audio tab is UNchecked since 44100Mhz is not a supported audio sampling rate for DVD.
OK, that's the good news. Now here comes the bad! :)
SVCD's have a resolution of 480x480/576 (ntsc/pal respectively). This resolution is not supported in the DVD specifications. TMPGDA is a total stickler for this and will not let you author the disc with SVCD-resolution files. Furthermore, even if you were able to, there is a possibility your DVD player wouldn't play it :(
There are ways round it. You can resize to CVD (352x480/576) which is supported (select Advanced in the DVD2SVCD Level box in the misc tab, the resize options then appear in the frameserver tab. However, anamorphic CVD-size output is still not supported :( . Alternatively you can use either of these resolutions in Anamorphic mode, then use DVDPatcher to fool TMPGDA (see this guide, part 3 (http://www.doom9.org/mpg/svcd2dvdr.htm)) or get DVDLab to author with (it is less fussy about absolute compliance).
Hope this helps
Nick
**I know the idea of dividing disc size by number of movies to get the size per movie is a little unscientific as different films have different lenghts and exhibit different compressibility characteristics. Therefore for a given final filesize, some movies will achieve better picture quality than others. But since you're a newb, lets try walking first, then graduate onto running!

Great news! Many thanks!!
As suspected I have loads more background reading and downloading to get through to achieve the goal - it never is as simple as it first seems!!
Cheers Nick!

I am trying to convert an AVI file to SVCD using D2Sroba and DVD2SVCD, I followed above posts, but got Windows Exception only a few minutes after CCE is launched.
My DVD2SVCD is 1.2.2 b1, and CCE is 2.50, where it went wrong?
Please help,
Thanks!

Is 'use resampleaudio' checked in frameserver tab?

Tried both (tick and not tick) 'Add ResampleAudio' in the 'Frameserver' tab, same problem - Windows Exception on CCE 2.5 SP.
Here is the log from D2SRoBa and DVD2SVCD, actually tried DVD2SVCD only (without D2SRoBa), but still got the same above problem.

Couple of things first. Play the avisynth script in VDub or WMP and see if it 'plays'. If so, run CCE 2.5 manually and drag and drop the script onto CCE. Let us know if it crashes. You will know, no worry :)

Thank you DDogg!
Could you please shed a bit more light on 'Play the avisynth script in VDub or WMP'?
I acutally don't know:
where to get Avisynth script?
what is and where to get VDub or WMP to play the script?
sorry about my poor knowledge :(

jayeo, in your work folder you will find a file called "AviSynth_Script_file.avs". Open this file with Windows Media Player. You can also drag and drop the file onto WMP. This one of the first things to always do after you encounter any problems.
As a side note, to save a lot of time when you are setting up the encode, you should always select "preview" in the "Go" button in the "conversion" tab before starting an encode to verify you see a picture. If you see a red and blck screen you will then know you have some type of problem with your settings and you would cancel the encode and check further.
