Any quality, free MPEG2 (de)codecs for MPC?

Are there any good, free MPEG2 decoders which work with Media Player Classic?

For a reason which elludes me, MPC has a real tendency to screw up when playing non-standard MPEG2 files. PowerDVD 4 handles this source pretty well but MPC just pukes while trying to use the scrollbar.

(highest quality not that important, but it has to run smooth)

everything I've tried was too slow for playing DVDs on my 500MHz-CPU..

I think your problem is that you have no hardware decode acceleration. If you have a video card capable of mpeg-2 decoding and it's turned on, 500 MHz is enough (at least with 2 channel sound).

Try for example WinDVD 4 and turn on the hardware acceleration in the settings. I've tried that recently with a 433 MHz celeron and it worked.

.msi files are executable on W2K and WinXP. For everything else, you shouldn't use those crap operating systems anyway.

@Shinigami-Sama: Your posts are almost unreadable. They have arbitrary linebreaks where none should be (the entry form has automatic linewrapping so there's really no need to press enter unless you want to start another paragraph), and I've hardly seen so many typing errors even by non native speakers. You might wanna try a spellchecker, because you've certainly crossed my pain treshold and it doesn't look like the language is the problem but really the typing.

@ scharfis_brain: using severaly oudated hardware has its price.. it seems the price is the amount of a professional software DVD player ;) I've had no problem playing DVDs on my P3 500 that I had 5 years ago..

I some how got into I have no idea when
so I end up using them as periods
might be because my period key is hit ot miss
and if I realize I miss it at 100wpm+ it's kinda late..
and I don't see my typos anymore either

Not sure I get this. What exactly is the point of replacing MPC's built in MPEG2 decoder with one based on MPC's MPEG2 decoder?

Though as far as digital video goes, the only viable alternative at the moment is Mac OS - the number of tools is smaller but especially in the DVD creation area there's a lot of good stuff on the Mac.

Heroine Warrior's Cinelerra looks pretty good. I've not worked with it so have no real opinion. A very good buddy of mine swears by FCP. For the past 20 years I've dreamed about CPUs on cards with a shared backplane. Sure would be nice to have some kind of super-seamless, foolproof cross-platform realtime...ah...I must be stoned...:devil:

IMHO it's not a decoder issue but built-in mpeg2 splitter.

It may be a flags issue. The source which screws things up is DirecTiVo.

Did you have tried the Dscaler MPEG-2 decoder?
On my old celeron 450 MHz is playing fine.

but I hate hte gui and would like ot keep mpc or tcmp is possible

Need alittle help, I just installed a dvd player and windows media said I needed to install a decoder so I installed Moonlight. I tried to play The Fifth Element but it says it won't play it because of copy protection. Whats with that, I'm I doing something wrong with the decoder.

Hi Axed, Yea great that helped, thanks, Now its playing the dvd, JUst have to figure out the rest of it. Is there a different player(free) that better than windows media player 10. So far I can't get it to give me a full screen.

Have a look at Media Player Classic (its on the front page at the moment). It has an inbuilt DVD decoder, and many more useful features.
