I had a program at one time that would tell you what codecs a video was made up of, and what players were required for said video. Just wondering if anyone can help point me in the right direction. I vainly tried searching the forums and the downloads, but to no avail. I gotta admit, I don't really know what I'm looking for, and could use some help.

Thanks.

Welcome to the forum!

I don't believe GSpot (http://www.headbands.com/gspot/download.html) will provide details on players, but give it a look, it will certainly do the rest.

Good title....it all starts there.

ammck55, that's what I was looking for! Every single detail about the video and rendering and all that jazz.

stephanV, that's nearly the same thing. It's actually a somewhat cleaner interface, so it would be good for my novice friends.

Thanks guys. Helped me out a lot.

afaik both tools mentioned report the codec according to the 4cc set in the file, the 4cc may be not the correct one tough

drf analyzer (http://www.geocities.com/analyzerDRF/) reads out the bitstream info set by the codecs and therefore reports the real codec, even if the 4cc was changed

In the beginning, the terminology itself can be a little intimidating, but some reading and studying can get you over the initial hump. Here's a few links that you may find of interest.

DVD FAQ (http://www.dvddemystified.com/dvdfaq.html)
DVD Basics (http://www.doom9.org/dvd-basics)
Doom9 Guides (http://www.doom9.org/guides.htm)

This is a huge over-simplification, but if you can decide what you have and what you want to turn it into, you've taken a huge step towards solving your problems. Cheers.
