"Problem Samples" - show us yours :)

recently i had a discussion with manono about that Fawlty Towers rainbow-and-crumpled-luma clip a few threads down - he's got an NTSC transcode of the original (awful quality) DVD that looks much much worse :O

well, anyway, i got the idea of having some kind of "problem sample" repository for common encoding problems. this way any potential script/plugin boffins can grab a sample of a particular problem and see what they can do with it.

similar things exist in the audio coding community - samples on HydrogenAudio such as castanets and udial.wav* are common ground for everybody, and as such development in our favourite codecs has increased at a rate it wouldn't have otherwise.

it would be very cool for a video problem-sample site to be built. i don't have any web space, or i'd do it myself. so i suppose i must call on the community to see if this is a good idea, and if so, who would be kind enough to host these samples (i'd be glad to put the site together, but wont be much use in the next few weeks - i'll be away).

would this be useful to anybody other than me? :)

*a footnote on Udial.wav - never play this one through speakers. headphones only, or the magic blue dust will leak out of your tweeters and they'll never work again.

I guess that'd be ok. There'd have to be mirrors to spread the bandwidth though, poor mufunyo.net ain't gonna do that alone :).

That would be moshimoshi, and I don't think it fits in this "context" :).

heh. i suck at phonetic :D

i'd love to learn japanese, but so far all i can do is watch anime and pick up the odd word (kawaii, hentai, etc)

as far as getting reliable webspace goes, i'll have a word to a geek friend of mine and see what's good. after all, problem clips could be useful not just to avisynth users, but practically anyone involved in that end of video production.

also it could provide hints to DVD authors of what not to do...

I doubt it would really accelerate things, but you could try using bittorrent as well; the extent to which it succeeds will of course depend on the number of people who leave their download windows open after they complete the files, considering how few people will probably be downloading them as time goes on. In order to get the most out of it, you could bundle together a lot of samples in a single zip file (at least for the initial release). If it works, it could save you a lot of bandwidth.

I very much like this idea. A lot of the problems (including mine) here seem to be of the type "Look at this crappy video - how can I improve it?" And a very important first step imho is to *categorize* the problem such as , e.g., noise, chroma, conversion, ... If a structured list of sample video would be available, this could be very helpful to succeed in this first step.

Or, to say it other words: once you know an appropriate filter (chain) to apply, the fine tuning is your own home work.

Someone in here (can't remember who) has an Evangelion clip that is supposed to be really screwed up. That would be an interesting addition for this.

it doesn't remove the ones in Chouji's background. Those are too evil :D. I'm gonna do those with some shotgun-on-a-fly method. :p

Looks to me like it once was analog composite at HDTV resolution, or something. The high frequencies that spawned the rainbows are not visible in the captured result anymore, thus giving derainbowers a REALLY hard time.
