I was browsing the net other day when i noticed this:

www.dvcm.fi (http://www.dvcm.fi)

DVCM is a new patented Digital Video Compressing Method. It is not a codec - DVCM uses common compressing routines and the video can be played in all standard video players. DVCM video has always better quality than video compressed with traditional methods. Just compare our results to other videos in the internet. DVCM brings an environmentally sound solution to several environmental issues.

Immediate downloading
Best possible visual quality
No need of hard disk capacity for watching videos and movies
No need of downloading extra programs
Possibility to watch videos in low bandwidths

there are some sample clips on the site, and i wasn't very convinced about any of the clips. "best possible visual quality" doesn't show in these and "possibility to watch videos in low bandwidths" didn't really hit me either as i loaded 400kb/s clip couple of minutes with my 512/256 connection until the first frame even came up.

what are your opinions about this?

My opinion is that this comes close to fraud.

"DVCM uses common compressing routines and the video can be played in all standard video players", means they actually use MPEG-1 or-2.

Edit: Even worse; they apparantly didn't mean 'hardware players' with that quote above.

Their 'sample files' are in asf-format and encoded in M$-MPEG4v3 (for those with short memory: i.e. DivX;-) 3.11)!

Very new and exciting format, really.

"DVCM is a new patented Digital Video Compressing Method"
and I couldn't find any international, european or finnish patents or trademarks with that name or organization, and the firm is established in Finland 20.02.2004. no way they've could made a new innovative "codec" in that time.

yeah, sounds like a big hoax to collect money from investors.

Their stuff is decoded by FFDSHOW. The video codec is MP43 stored in ASF container. Their own preview is laggy (buffer 2 times for 2 sec).

Digi-TV browser possibilities improve rapidly after getting new content
Digi-Box includes browser
Compressing is still needed
New services improve broadcasting
DVCM-video doesn`t download into hard disk
DVCM-Video can`t be directly copied from broadcastings
DVCM-Videos are also suitable for low bandwidths Laggy on my 3mbps :D

Here's the key phrase to spotting the hoax. What in the HELL does video compression have to do with helping the environment? Nothing! It's a hook to catch suckers who don't know anything about computers, but want to save the Spotted Owl.

"and it cures the common cold and brings about world-peace",

are some more achievements they seem to have forgotten to add. :D

"Their stuff is decoded by FFDSHOW"

sounds like a contradiction to me, what about graphedit and file writer then .. but if it's m$-mpeg4 it's not even worth the hassle trying that out :p

people like nicolas (rududu) vanish and stuff like this pops up ..could make me depressive..
