I have been searching the forum and am more confused than ever before.
Here is what I want to do:
I have several mpeg movies that were downloaded from the Prelinger archive. (mostley WW II training films) that I want to convert to DVD.
Not SVCD or VCD.
Could someone steer me in the right direction?
I'm a complete Newbie so I guess what I need is the kindergarten version not even the DVD101 version.
Thanks

hi there, its so simple you'll laugh. mpeg-2 are what is on dvd's. i think mpeg-1 can go on it also, but im not sure. all you need a dvd authoring program to make it work with a proper dvd player.

Not quite. The video in DVDs is MPEG-2, but not just any MPEG-2. The video must have specific resolutions and framerates.
Smokey, I recommend two areas on www.doom9.org, a section called "The Basics" that has 14 interesting links for the absolute newbie, including a link to the official DVD FAQ where specifications are discussed, and a section called Guides, where you can see step-by-step DVD authoring (what Jimmy described) guides, as well as conversion guides, in the event you elect to use one of the other formats from the Prelinger archives, such as DivX, as your source format.
Welcome to the forum, and, good luck!

hi smokey,
with all this new information coming at you i understand that the forum rules (http://forum.doom9.org/forum-rules.htm) are not the most important issues you care about atm... still, pls use a more describing title for your next thread.
for your convenience, i changed this one for you
cheers

PS: good luck finding the information, if anything is not clear, feel free to ask more questions around here ;)

Thank you for correcting the title of the post.
I assure you I will read the rules a bit more carefully the next time.
The info that I have been given so far has not made a heck of a lot of sense to me ( I guess I should have learned to read Greek! :-) )
What I need is MPEG to DVD for dummies.
Any how, thanks to all for trying.
(Now I know why my wife wears a "T" shirt that says "I'm with Stupid")

perhaps you'll want to try this guide (it expects all mpegs to be mpeg2 video though)
http://www.doom9.org/mpg/svcd2dvdr.htm
you should be able to start off at 'Step 2'

Go to the Doom9 Downloads section and download dvdpatcher. Open your file with dvdpatcher and it will give you the files information, ie framerate, size ect. Post that information here and we can tell you how to proceed with a little more certainty.

OK, I ran DVDPatcher ant this is what I get:
Filesize: 232984417
Swpuenceheader found
Size: 368x480
AspectRatio: 4:3
Framerate: 29.970 frames/sec
Bitrate: 3500000
As I said, I am a rank amature at this.
What next?
Is there a DVD for Dumies available anywhere?

You need to do 2 things. First re-encode the mpg to dvd specs and then author it to a dvd. follow the Link (http://www.doom9.org/) Select the option -->DVD / miniDVD. The select first Dvd encoding guides and then Dvd Authoring guides. Also on the guides main page under Other Stuff is the Dvd Basics page. You need to do some reading and get aqauinted with terms and methods. Taking this step now will save you lots of heartburn and aggravation.
