grainy picture with qpel

Yes, its more grainy than the source. I never get grainy picture if i leave qpel unchecked in the xvid setting. But you know, i wanted to try this feature.

Its not really a BIG problem, ill just keep it it unchecked in the future.

from what ive read, qpel is great for 1 cd encodes and if you constantly get undersized files.

obviously you haven't read enough : P, there's no such thing as 'QPEL is great for 1 cd rips...
Whether QPEL yields better results or not depends on the source

Lot ppl only watch 1CD encodes instead of their DVD's !!!

But @ thus low bitrates nearly all grain is compressed away... :rolleyes:

So, sometimes they miss how much grain was already in the DVD source !!!

Thats why I asked if the grain wasn't already in the source... ;)

To say something maybe useful, i often use qpel, i never seen that it adds noise if its not there in the source.
But i must say that i cannot see a real difference if qpel is enabled or not, at least not in my encodes, usually 1500kBit or more and original dvd resolution.

I aim for 800 mb (90 min cd´s) target size. Maybe i should have used the word "noisy" picture. Im not sure how to explain the result of my encodes with qpel enabled. But i do know that the result is better with qpel unchecked.

I am now going experiment with a matrix called hvs good picture, one encoding session with qpel and one without.

What do you guys think about using a deinterlace filter? I guess its good sometimes, but the picture seems to get a litte too blurry in some cases.

Both Qpel and GMC becomes more responsive without the mattes!

The resampling filters for qpel can in principle cause some extra ringing.

ive tested it a few times on about 5 different sources (easy to hard to compress) and even the codec comparison uses qpel for a 1 cd target. i like its effect also, just not its decoding (lowend cpu)

i didnt think straight when i wrote my first post, it should say "from what ive read, qpel is good for undersized targets and from my experience very good on alot of 1cd targets also."

that makes alot more sense and is atucally what i was trying to say.

dunno why milan sets simple idct as default, afaik none of the popular codecs (xvid, divx5, 3ivx, nd...) use simple, in contrary all use "xvid" idct
