video qulity and file size

I have converted some VCD files (MPEG-1) into MPEG-4 format (DivX 5.1.1) using VirtualDub, my purpose is to save some hard drive space. But I found a little bit video quality reduced. All the DivX settings are default (1-pass, 780kbps).

Is there any way to greatly reduce the file size(compare to the original VCD file) while still keep the video quality?

Yes,

In most 'backing up' instances I would suggest not to use 1pass CBR or VBR. Always use 2pass VBR!

Granted it takes longer to generate your encodes but the results are much more pleasing and nearer to the original. That said, converting from VCD sources is always a little disappointing because the source is often quite poor and blocky to begin with...

...one big thing that no codec is happy at doing, is re-rendering from blocky sources!

You could try passing the video through a deblocking filter, or if nothing else works, try setting Pre-processing inside the divx pro codec at Medium or so - altough it will blur the image, it should help with lowering the frame complexity.

Where's the deblocking filter? And where can I set Pre-processing inside the divx pro codec at Medium or so? I am using VirtualDubMod with DivX 5.1.1 pro and XviD.
