View Full Version : Question About DVD+R DL Capacity

The current single layer dvd+r discs are 4,483 MB in capacity. I was thinking that the new upcoming dual layer discs would be (4,483 x 2) in capacity. However, after reading the threads on this board I see that the size is going to be about 8.5 GB. Does this mean that each layer is going to be smaller then the current single layer discs? Thanks.

Yes, exactly like on normal DVD-9 video dvds.

Thanks for the answer.
I did some more research. I'm posting it for anyone else who had the same question.
8.5 GB DVD+R DL will be about 8,140 MB in size.
Since 8.5 is based on 1000, it converts to 7.95 using 1024.
(7.95 x 1024) ~ 8140
Wishes to self they would print the actual size in MB on disc packaging.

8.5 times 1000= 8500. devide that by 1024 and
get 8.3. would that be the capacity?
How did you get 7.95 anyway?
7.96 GiB x 1.024^3 = 8.55 GB

Just a note, I just spotted the first pricing for a 5-pack of Verbatim DVD+R DL discs.. 14EUR per disc! You can get 14 quality DVD-R for that price :(
I was thinking DL discs would initially be around 5-7€, not 14!
I paid ~14€ for a Pioneer DVD-R THREE years ago. I hope it wont take 3 years for the prices for DL media to drop to a decent level (I'd say decent is twice the price of single layer media at any time, no more).

I paid 9,90Euro for ONE Verbatim DVD-R in Dec. 2001 ;)
A few days ago, someone on Brennmeister posted a link to 5 Verbatim DVD+R9 for 28 Euro. Where did you see those for 14 Euro?

5.6€ sounds reasonable for the entry price, although still 5 times higher than a single layer (or 3 times higher than a verbatim single layer). It was at a large retailers site in my country, but I think they might be trying to make a quick buck off the new standard.

You should be glad that the first manufacturer to sell DVD+R9 media is not Princo! As you (hopefully) get Mitsubishi quality on those DVD+R9 discs, you should only compare their price to proper dvd±r5 media.

Yep comparing it to verbatim single layer products (where the latest 8x discs sell for around 1.90€) its not bad at all.
And the reason the DL media is MMC dye is cause I think they are the only ones thus far with approved quality dye (being the original developer!). Ritek will surely follow suit though others might have a hard time acquiring the license.
edit: just like to add, that AGAIN after about 3 hours of fighting a disney disc, I think my time is worth the extra 3€ aswell! ;)
