View Full Version : MP4 editing/slicing?

I'm looking for a simple program to cut my large mp4s into smaller pieces... I thought perhaps mp4tool/mp4edit was the solution, but alas it's not available and MP4Box doesn't seem to offer any such options.
Can anyone tell me if I'm out of luck? Is there no such beast around that would allow me to do a simple trim of mp4 files without having to reencode the material?
thanks in advance...
quicktime pro should be able cut .mp4 files (including aac audio and mpeg-4 simple profile video)

Or maybe extracting (without reencoding) video and audio from mp4, cutting separately and then importing parts to mp4 would help?

Hm... yeah I was thinking of extraction...
but...
mp4 - avi-video+aac-audio - avi+wav/mp - edit and back
sounds like a lot could go wrong ;)
Will have to look into QT6Pro, but if it doesn't re-encode the video/audio it will be a welcome choice. We are currently looking into getting the mpeg4ip mp4clip utility for linux to compile and work...

note that mp4clip is far from being stable, someone needs to "tune" it a little bit :D

Yes, we :) We're a company that uses streaming occasionally, and then we are using MP4 ... when streaming we archive the streams, but now we have several gigs of 8 hour long mp4 files, which we would like to "chop" for easier access... :)
Still, tested with the latest QTPro and it does indeed seem to be able to what I want. The precision of the trim functions are not very good with so long files (about 6-8 hours each) but it will do for now I guess...

The open source project ViTooKi is working on such a tool called muViCut (and many others) that will probably be embedded in their muViTrans GUI (a transcoder from anything to MP4), but they have not released it yet (will take some more weeks). A drawback is that they only support MP3 as the audio track in a MP4 file or live stream at the moment. Furthermore you would have to obey the license they will choose for their project if you are a commercial company.
3ivx.com is also developing a similar application (with AAC support), but they also need some more time. So hopefully we'll see a MP4 editor/cutter soon that works as least as good as using QuickTime Pro with MOV files and passing them through to MP4.

they seem to work on lots of tools for mp4 inlcuding streaming and a player too, and the muvicut tool seems to be also already available in their cvs
hans-jürgen, do you have some more infos on the project apart from the ones on their webpage?

Being a SourceForge project (that's how I found them) they also have 2 mailing lists, one for developers and one for users. They are open to new suggestions and also support from outside, e.g. with AAC implementation. Basically they all work for an Austrian university project in Klagenfurt, so it's not a one-man project like some others. At the moment they are trying to come up with a first release with their most important tools, among them the streaming server, the player and the muViTrans-GUI, as far as I know.

I also have a need for the best mp4 cutter without re-encoding, did you find something better than qtpro? I don't want to pay for qtpro if it is not one of the better solutions for my needs and you didn't seem all that pleased with it.
I want to trim mp4 24mbit files without re-encoding first nd foremst ad then I want to make sure the file integrity is in tact. I have the limited feature version of aimone mp4 cutter and with my testing, it is doing something to the mp4s after cutting because the original mp4 can be played in my camcorder and the cut file is not recognized in my camcorder. < So whats going on with that? and what is the best mp4 optin paid or free! thx :)
