How do I compress .avi ?

I have an avi/divx file of 700mb, but when I try to encode it to burn to dvd using either "Main Concept" or "Ulead" the file ends up at 5.7Gb, dvdShrink and DVD2one do not recognise the file to compress it to fit on a 4.7Gb disk.....so how do I do it? or do I need a seperate program to encode avi/divx, preferably to change into .vob files.

i'd recommend DVD2SVCD for you, as you do not seem to own a copy of CCE!
