Hey, all...

First I wanna thank the team responsible for "Big 3". Bank in the day it took days AND about 10 individual appz and utils to get a decent backup. Now, the "Big 3" makes me feel in heaven :D .

Okay, now to my problem. Been using "Big 3" and Doom9 guide (including the new one) for quite some time and hadn't a problem 'till now. This movie, "Returner", ends up with out of sync subtitles. I found out the after running DIF4U and looking at the sub's .sst file...the timing is off. Instead of starting the first sub at around 22 seconds into the movie..it starts it at around 40 seconds. I have followed the guide to a "T", heck I have been using it with nothing but success after success. I tried DVDShrink to see if it would have a problem, but it didn't..subs were in sync. I believe I am doing something wrong or may be not doing something. It's just that I have done it the same way I have done it before, the only difference is that I am now using DIF4U 1.4.7 which I never used until now. Please let me know if you need more specific information.

Thank you all for at least reading this!!

I had this exact same problem on this exact same dvd. I was using dif4u 1.4.0 though. I fixed it by reripping the subtitles with subrip. Strangely, on my system the subrip ones came out spot on. But on a buddy of mine's system using his original dvd, we still had to apply a time offset correction in subrip to get them to come out right. This was just a strange dvd as far as subtiles are concerned...

OMG, thanx Tobytl!! I thought I was going crazy. Okay, but now I have a new problem...don't know how to use Subrip. Also, since I already have my movie re-encoded and ready to go on my "DIF4UOutput" folder, could I just replace the file with the wrong timecode for the one with the right timecode? and which file would that be? I used to use DVDMaestro, not used to Scenarist but getting the hang of it. I saw a guide on Subrip but doesn't help in the replacement of the files that DIF4U outputs, since I already have a Scenarist script.

Thanx again!:D

hi Ichiro and welcome to the forum!

i will assume that using the guide for subrip you have figured out how to re-rip your subs (please correct me if i am wrong).
as for replacing the other subs, you have two choices:

1. you can substitute your existing subs with your new ones in the 'subs' folder created by DIF4U, however it would involve manually changing the paths of .bmps in the .sst file to correctly point to the new destination, plus re-name the .sst file so that it conforms with DIF4Us naming schemes ...and you would still have to create a new scenarist script ...

or:

2. import your scenarist script in scenarist. go to the 'track editor' window and select the track which you need to change the subtitles for, and delete the 'wrong' subtitle streams. then use the 'import subpicture' tool (either using the toolbar icon or from the menu) and navigate to your 'new' .sst files and import.
see this guide for a detailed description of this process:
Full DVD Backup guide (http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/mpg/doitfast-guide.htm) and check out the 'reauthoring section.
you will also have to manually select forced subs (if there are any?). run a search on forced subtitles to find some methods of how to do it. if you run into any problems post back.

please note that you will most likely have to adjust your subtitle colours. you can check the colours in the simulation window, and you can change the stream globally in the menu options from the 'track editor' window.

hope some of that made sense.

cheers

Thanx, jel! It made perfect sense. For a while there I thought no one else was gonna try to help me :D. I will try this, which sounds like what I should do, and post back if anything. Finally, I can sleep...thanx again jel!:p

no worries.

i detail the way in which you can change the subtitle colours in the BOV guide i wrote.
look for the link in the sticky 'guides and faq' located at the top of this forum.

Ichiro,

I had the exact same problem with Returner R1 using dif4u 1.4.7 + dc4u + scenarist 2.6. I did not want to rerip anything so I did this (and I think it's a fairly good solution):

I opened up the .SST in URU Subtitle Workshop 2.51 and did Edit>timings>delay and then selected - from the pulldown menu and put in 19 seconds in the time field like this [00:00:19;000].

If you do the same thing make sure that it's applied to the whole file and not a selection. So in essense all the subtitles got adjusted for -19 seconds.

Also, you have to keep in mind that when you save the .SST file in subtitle workshop it will overwrite the header with it's generic PAL template, so you better have the real .SST file header saved somewhere, I just copied and pasted it in notepad.

Another thing is SubWorkshop doesnt like when there are 0's in front of subtitle line numbers in an .SST like this:

001 <subtitle> <timing>
002 <subtitle> <timing>
003 <subtitle> <timing>

it took me awhile to figure out why it kept saying "bad subtitle file"

The easiest way to edit the 0's out is with TSEPro editor (windows version of the famous Q-Edit), just do a CTRL+K to start marking a column and scroll down and to the right if there';s more that one 0 involved. When done marking hit - to delete. You should be able to find a fully working shareware of TSE on the web.

Hope this makes sense.
Good luck!

@wfn1

This method was far simpler. THANX A MILLION!! It worked. Well, jel's method would have worked too, except like I said in an earlier post, I am used to DVD Maestro...not Scenarist and so couldn't import subs to save my life (think I probably corrupted the .sst file).

@jel

Thanx for your suggestions, jel! Unfortunately I had a difficult time
with importing subtitles into Scenarist which shouldn't have been dificult but kept getting errors on the import after tampering with the .sst file which I probably corrupted. You gave me the right idea though..thank you.

Ichiro: I've been getting some erratic reports of async subs with 1.4.7. If you have that project still, please try the vsrip.exe and vsconv.exe that come with 1.4.0 and let us know if your subs sync. I think there may be an issue with the 1.0.0.6 versions of those apps.

@Eyes`Only:
Also take a look at the IFO. Async subs are mostly caused by unreferenced material at the beginning of the PGC, i.e. the first cell referenced in the PGC is say V/C Id 1/2, so V/C Id 1/1 is not referenced. So the subtitle timestamps are not zero based in the first cell in the PGC, which is why subs appear too late after reauthoring. You'd have to find out the lenght of the unreferenced cell(s) and add an appropriate 'Delay: -hh:mm:ss:ms' to the .IDX file before calling VsConv.

so how would that make the vsrip/vsconv 1.0.0.5 work properly?

Hmm maybe an other example of non existing cells/vobids? Non existing in the ifo but existing in the vob. I'm curious what happens if you demux by vobid. I've seen a couple of those dvds and demuxing by vobid can be a good solution in these cases. I don't have the title to test myself unfortunately

Edit: hmm this is exactly what RB meant . I better read thoroughly instead of scanning through :D
