I have browsed the forum and causes seem to point to the ASPI layer. However I have reason to believe the ASPI layer is properly installed:

I used ForceASPI as recommended so often here
The ASPICHK.exe utility by Adaptec says it is properly installed and fully operational
SmartRipper recognized the ASPI layer
DVD Decrypter recognized the ASPI layer

But DVDx fails to open video files. So obviously the first thing I would suspect is maybe the .VOB/.IFO files are corrupted. But I have tried on a number of different DVDs ... unless the decrypting software such as SmartRipper or DVD Decrypter do not work. But I highly doubt that. So I am at a loss as to what may be wrong.

Hardware:
Toshiba Satellite A45-S1502
Celery 2.80 GHz
512 MB RAM
60 GB HD

Software:
Windows eXPired Handicapped Edition (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/default.asp)
SP 2 RC 1 v. 2096 (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/sp2preview.mspx)
ASPI 4.60

DVDx? Isn't that like 2 year old software? People are still using that?

I chose to use DVDx because it worked on my older computer: Pentium !!! 900 MHz with Windows 2000. I just recently acquired the newer hardware and was wondering if I can use the same software.

So new software, new learning curve. That will be fun.

I guess I chose DVDx in the past because I just want to backup my DVD movies onto VCDs and SVCDs since I do not have a DVD burner.

Here is another question:

Have people successfully run the said software in virtual machines?

With the use of VMWare (http://www.wmware.com) I can install Windows 2000 on top of Windows eXPired and continue to do what I did on the faster computer. Just a thought.

mrbass - DVDx 2.2 was released just over a year ago, not 2. also age has nothing to do with the usefulness of a program. if you dont want to use it and/or dont like it fine, plenty of others do though. so a little less distaste if you please. :)
oh and yes a lot of people still use it, i still regularly get emails asking questions.

em64t - try going directly from the dvd drive(using hd buffering in input settings) and see if that has a problem aswell.
also after you load the ifo check the time in the index box. if it is not the movies length then select the one that is.
also you can turn off aspi use from the input settings but DVDx does prefer aspi.
yes i remember a guy saying he ran DVDx fine on his linux system using virtual machine software but i dont remember offhand what.

I tried what you mentioned above and still crashes.

Thanks I will try it later this weekend. As the jokes going around say Windows 2000 take about 2000 hours to install ... I know it takes less than that as I have already installed Windows 2000 a number of time, but it still does take a considerable amount of time.

Outstanding.

Works like a charm.

I am back to encoding videos and making backups.
