.NET news: Mono Beta 1, SharpDevelop Beta 1

as .NET becomes more and more popular (I've seen even hardheaded .NET critics turn into .NET enthusiasts in the last couple of years) I thought this might be of interest for some. The both probably most ambitious and fast evolving .NET open source project Mono and SharpDevelop recently released Beta 1 versions.

argh.. no debugger in #Develop 1.0.. that's major bad news for anybody used to VS.NET who'd rather use an open source and/or free solution.

Maybe I should try to run my UDP throughput test programs on mono again.. last time I tried, even though the alpha/beta release claimed to implement the whole System.Net namespace, my program would crash right away.

I think it can't be compared to VisualStudio, especially when you code VB. It's the best application I've seen so far. I know they are working on a debugger, at least that was the excuse not to fix the flaws in the TextEditor control which DVX and AVSEdit uses. I think MonoDevelop which is SharpDevelop with SWF replaced with GTK# has already a debugger but it's a Linux only thing and has other limitations like no designers. Anyway, they evolve at a fast pace so within a year nice features can be expected

yesterday I played around with the latest SharpDevelop IDE and must say it's a big improvement over previous versions, many annoying bugs and flaws were fixed including most things I noticed in the TextEditor component :). They got even C++ .NET in it now (Ok, that didn't work for me) and VB C# translation which happen to be quite useful for me now works in both directions

remind me again when they add a debugger. Though I must say since the company I work for pays for MSDN membership, I doubt I'll ever move away from VS.NET. But when I code in Java, I only use open source software these days (Eclipse & NetBeans.. though Oracles JDeveloper also looks pretty interesting).
