View Full Version : muxing lots of demuxed (by cellid) vid and audio files

Hi All,
My apologies if this is in the wrong forum...
I own a copy of LOTR the two towers special edition (5 disc version, region 4, PAL). Disc1 after stripping unwanted audio etc comes to approx 4,300,000 kbytes, disc 2 5,000,000 kbytes. So I though with a little trimming and shifting some video from disc2 to disc1 I could back them both up without recoding the video onto 2 x dvd-r's.. In doing so...
I demuxed by cellid into seperate directories (one for each disc) a series of about 32 files per disc (16 mpv and 16 ac3 (i think they are)). I shuffled files about until I have approx 2 discs of equal size that I think can be muxed, then burnt onto 2 dvd-r's (possibly with some minor snipping of credits/intro).
Normally I would mux using ifoedit, however given there are a heap of smaller files needing to be in order, what is the easiest way to put them all back together then mux? I tried with dvdlab, however it seemed to only let me put one mpv into one movie.. and vobedit seems to want to join vob files not unmuxed mpg and ac3 files...
Help! :-)

Here's one way to do it:
-Demux by cell ID into VOBs using VobEdit.
-Group VOBs so sizes are right.
-Make sure the 2 sets of VOBs are named right.
-Use Vobedit to demux a single m2v and ac3 stream from each vob set.
-Reauthor
I've used this method before for splitting DVD9 -> 2 x DVD-R.
edit: actually, because the start of the disc 2 AC3 will probably be an incomplete audio frame, use DVD2AVIdg is save the audio and use the given delay when muxing.

Thanks Matthew,
Your process worked well! however :)
Im having another and perhaps unrelated issue.. I followed your instructions but found the audio was out of sync, not knowing how to fix that... I deleted the demuxed to cellid VOB file that contained the end credits of disc2 instead to get it down to the right size :) however VOBedit is refusing to demux all the vob files in the titleset for the series of demuxed (by cellid) vob files.. If I move one of them to a new directory it will demux a single file, but if I ask it to demux all the files in the titleset it does not.. the files are named as vobedit wrote them VTS_01_001.VOB through VTS_01_0037.VOB - do these need to be renamed to VTS_01_0x.VOB for it to work? (Ive only just though of this now, and im at work so cannot try it (sigh))..

Did you use DVD2AVI for the audio and use the delay figure it gives? It's not surprising the audio is out of sync, but it should be fixed by using the audio delay.
I've only used VobEdit on under 10 VOBS, but VTS_01_001.VOB through to VTS_01_037.VOB would be more appropriate than what you did as the number of characters after the second underscore should be constant (0037=4 characters, and it should be 3).
Also, I believe you need to select the mpeg stream and "demux complete title set".

Thanks Matthew,
Will give it a shot tonight.
I did not try using dvd2avi to get the audio delay.. I opted to cut the credits (far easier for me :-).. I havent used dvd2avi by itself before.. but then again I'll have a look at it to see what Ive been missing!
I was selecting mpeg stream and "demux complete title set" (at least I got that part right)sorry if that was not clear in my previous message..

Well, if you are not changing the split point you shouldn't need to use DVD2AVIdg (use this and not regular DVD2AVI). VobEdit should be fine for demuxing the AC3.
Another option is to use VobEdit to get the LBA (those 6 digit numbers down the left side) of the start of the credits cell. Then use vstrip GUI to rip the last vob (VTS_01_5.VOB) up to this LBA minus 1. This cut VOB becomes your new fifth vob and use VobEdit to extract.
The LBA should be (size of all cells in bytes - size of credits cell in bytes)/2048 but navigate to this LBA in VobEdit and double check. It should be a navigation pack and on the right pane the cell ID will be displayed along with the cell elapsed time, which should be 00:00:00.00 because it's the start of a cell where you are cutting.

All done. Albeit with a slightly different (far cruder) method. Thanks for your help Matthew - it was much appreciated!..
VOBEDIT 0.6 will not demux all title sets when there are a lot of them (38 vob files in my case) I even renamed them all to VTS_01_xx.VOB .. it creates a 0k output file. maybe a bug?
Summary:
To make LOTR the two towers special edition fit on 2 dvd-r's without re-encoding, I ended up getting out my butchers knife and..
1. stripping the unwanted streams with ifoedit
2. demuxing by cellid to vob files with vobedit
3. Used vobrator to delete the video component only of the last 2 cells (credits only) - I wanted to keep the audio..
4. Used vobedit to rejoin vobs
5. ifoedit to create new ifo files (note, needed to run a get VTS sectors on the newly created the IFO files)
6. imgtool classic to build the final ISO's
