I have a stupid question:
I have several multimedia files, but I don't know whether they are in VCD, SVCD, raw AVI, DivX or XviD format. I understand I have to use different tools to edit them (cut, merge, convert format and etc.). Is there an easy way to tell their formats?
Please help me out. Much much thanks.
first of all, what extensions do the files have?

They are .mpg and .avi files.
to analyse .avi files use the tool gspot
sorry but i dont know enough about .mpg files... i assume they are simply mpeg-2 (svcd)

Use dvdpatcher for mpeg files. It will give you the info about the file.

AVIcodec (http://avicodec.duby.info/) is a tool that will give you file info of most types of formats, included avi and mpg (extensions sometimes say very little about the real format)

Thanks for fast reply from all above people:)
I try to convert a VCD file into DivX using VirtualDub 1.5.10, so I can save some hard drive space. After select audio compression format as "MP3 56kbit/s" and relative video filter and compression format (DivX 5.1.1), then save, I got an error message: "Error initializing audio stream compression". Then the process stopped.:(
what should I do next? The original audio format is detected as "Mpeg-1 audio Layer 2" by AVIcodec (the Gspot tool can't tell this format).
Give me a hand again, please.
