View Full Version : Xvid & DivX5 in GK & AutoGK not working

I am encoding movies in AutoGK but most of the time the aspect ratios are wrong. Is there a workaround to this? The 16:9 aspect movies are getting stretched to 4:3. I can change the aspect ratio in BSPlayer to suit my need for viewing but I'm losing quality on the 4:3 aspect ratio because originally the source is widescreen. In some cases there are black strips with the video streching it so much that even a quick tap of A(change aspect ratio) in BsPlayer wont help.
I was using Gordian Knot on my old computer for backups. Now I've bought a new computer, I installed Gordian Knot, the codec+rip pack and the update. But DivX5 & Xvid aren't working and I can only encode in DivX3. DivX5 gives me 10+ GB encodes and the options menu on GKnot for changing the pass settings for DivX5 doesn't work. I click on the first pass settings or second pass but nothing happens.
I am setting up Xvid according to the Doom9 guide but after encoding the video looks skewed (the right side of the picture shows up on the left side and the picture is tilted towards the right) I double checked the settings and have setup the settings as per the guide but still Xvid encodes are looking like that. I tried different sources but same story.. DivX5-can't change settings and Xvid-skewed video. DivX3 doesn't look as good as the other two so it doesn't suit my purpose of making backups.
I uninstalled GKnot and reinstalled but the problem did not go away... I removed DivX5 and reinstalled with a fresh download but still no luck. I installed AutoGK and then 1.9b, 1.9b comes with the newer beta of Xvid but it won't install and gives a message saying remove older version of Xvid. I removed it, restarted and tried installing but still I get the error message.
So the bottomline is-
1. DivX5 wont work for me.. what's the solution? - Format hdd - WinXP installation - GordianKnot fresh install... (earlier encoded files in DivX5 are playing fine)
2. Xvid Skewed Results - What changes should I make to get correct results in Gordian Knot (AutoGK Xvid results are coming out correct but the aspect ratio is wrong) If needed which file's text should I paste here for troubleshooting purposes for the Xvid-video-skewed problem.
3. Using AutoGK because Gk isn't doing the work for me but aspect ratio's are killing me... What do I do? HELP!
Formatting-reinstalling WinXp is my last resort and i'd like to keep it as the last option. What can I do to fix DivX5 and Xvid encodes?
For some reason the search feature of doom9 forum isn't working on my system... I get an error on search.php

hi doomed,
wow there's definitely something screwed up here :)
can it be that you did install some codec packs or so? they are known to cause severe problems! Also perhaps a list of all installed codecs would help quite a bit!
anyway, i think it would help a great deal if you could :logfile:
with those we can try to narrow down the problem and lean you on the right path!
About this skewed xvid video, a screenshot would really be nice too :)

edit: the search function is working perfectly for me (Mozilla Firefox and IE 6)

Hey Steve :) Long Time
I have posted screenshots of the videos. There are six screenshots in all showing the problem. I read in another thread that I should change the w-modul & h-modul under output resolution on the resolution page in GK to 16 and that would solve the Xvid video skewing problem. Tried that but now something strange is happening- the first pass starts but the projected file size is smaller and in the second pass the fps shows as zero and nothing happens.
I am getting aggravated :)
Anyways screenshots posted to http://www.geocities.com/desertrose157/
I looked up the codecs installed and strangely I cannot see the DivX5 codec... DivX3 and Xvid are there but no DivX5.. And AutoGK says DivX5 not installed... And I had installed it
Anyways now installing DivX Pro (Registered) and lets see what happens...
Which files should I post here? please give me names and I shall link the text on my website.
Thanks
Anshu

hi Anshu,
those screenshots are truly shocking... never seen such a thing before
could it be that you are using ffdshow for xvid playback? if so, perhaps try to deactivate xvid playback in ffdshow and let the native decoder do the work. there have been some problems with newer xvid builds and ffdshow!
the most important autoGK logfile is the one in the same directory as your final movie. it should be titled <moviefilename>_gk.log - you can just post it here, no need to upload it to your webspace!
did you change the h & w mod from 32 to 16 or did you increase it to 16 from a lower mod

PS: does the search function work again?

I increased it to 16 from 8 and tried encoding but no go...
I uninstalled ffdshow but no difference in the Xvid playback.
I tried the search function but no go... could be my IE... will try another browser tonite. It just gives page not found everytime.
I installed and registered DrDivX which came with DivX 5.1.1
I encoded two movies last night with DrDivX but the resulting video is garbled. DrDivX gave no errors. And a test file of two minutes came out looking properly.
I am truly tired... I think I am going to backup over the weekend and install a fresh copy of WinXP. Is there a utility for keeping track of the codecs that are installed and removing them in the event of a problem?

Finally something's working... the search function doesn't work with my download manager on but after exiting it works...

I can now do DivX5 encodes from GKnot:cool:
I will play around with Xvid and troubleshoot to see if it works... But there's another problem.. I've been noticing that the video I play sometimes rushes forward by a few seconds and then goes to the normal playback rate. It's like as if scanning @ 4X for a few seconds and then stopped. It happens in different places in the video so it's not a problem with the encode. It happens in BSPlayer, WMP9 and Zoom Player... What could be the reason and how do I go about fixing this? Could it be ffdshow? I uninstalled and installed again but the problem didn't go away. Please help!

I assume this happens when you jump ahead (or back) in the video.
If so, then you are seeing normal behavior. The structure of an MPEG video is to have a keyframe followed by frames containing changes. With MPEG-1 and MPEG-2, this is often a very small number of frames, and often not very noticable. But with MPEG-4 such as DivX and XviD, the time between keyframes may be 10 seconds or more.
Once the video strikes a key frame in playback, it will proceed normally.
For technical information on MPEG "Group of Pictures" (GOP) structure, see http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=19436. It's a little outdated (DivX and Xvid both support B-Frames), but may help.

It's happening while watching video. Sorry I didn't elaborate much in my post. While watching a video there will be a jump in the video and it skips ahead. However if I play the same scene back it will not happen again at the same spot but at some other spot in a few seconds. It's a random thing... It happens automatically while watching video and keeps happening randomly. I don't know where to start troubleshooting. I haven't played any mpeg files to check but it's happening in all avi files. I had put in a new sound card and have updated the drivers after that. Could it be ffdshow? If yes then what settings do I change to see if ffdshow is the cause. I am downloading drivers for my GeForce 5200 as I write this post and will install them and see if it's got something to do with that.

Start...(All) Programs...ffdshow...Configuration.
Select the codecs you want or don't want. "libavcodec" means ffdshow will be used, "disabled" means the installed codec will be used.

I think problem was with the video drivers.. I downloaded the drivers from NVidia and updated my GeForce fX 5200 drivers and I don't have the problem anymore. I also disabled ffdshow and ran an avi file and then with ffdshow enabled and both times the playback was smooth.
