Can having too many codecs on your system actually hamper encoding.
If so, which codecs should you ensure that you have. Or is there no real definitive answer?

yes some codecs can have a certain influence on others...

depends on what you want to do...
for my purposes the latest xvid build is sufficient for encoding, but most people will probably also keep a version of divx (which should not cause any troubles)
for some more thorough video editing stuff you'll probably also need a huffyuv codec (same goes for capturing).
mpeg2 and 1 codecs shouldn't cause any troubles anyway
some codecs, like the intel indeo codec are needed to be able to correctly play certain games (e.g. Mafia)

Or is there no real definitive answer?

no :)

hey paulo88, you might consider abandoning all MPEG4-related codecs in favor of "ffdshow", which is a universal MPEG4 decoder (DivX 3.11,4,5, XviD). It also has some excellent post-processing options+external subtitle rendering+mjpeg decoding and many more.
So, download and try for yourself...
