hello folks. I donīt know wther this is for basic or advanced authoring, but sure is pretty advanced for me....
I have just got a movie imported with a script created from DVD2DVD-r,,,, so my next and the very last step is to import subtitles.... can scenarist import SUP files? if not then how would I do?
I donīt like the subrip cus of the OCS funtion, I basically have to rewrite the whole subtitle :/
plaese,,, help is appreciated ad I have tried doing a search
I am using senarist cus I very much like the Program DVD2DVD-r and I need to compile the main Video titleset with multiple of PGCs... in case someone would wonder

SUP is used by IFOEdit/Rejig. What you want is bitmaps and a sst file containing all the timecodes. They will be very large (hundreds of megs) but won't take up any more space on the DVD than the original subs (i.e not much).
You can use SubRip to rip directly from the VOBs to bmps/ssts.
However, best way (IMO - I've found it to be more accurate) is to use vsrip/vsconv combination. vsrip creates sub/idx and vsconv will extracts bmps/ssts from the sub/idx.
Also, although older, VobSub/SubResync are GUI based and should produce same results as vsrip/vsconv.

thanks for the reply
but yea, I have tried subrip a few times... awful with the OCR
so vsrip/vsconv ,, are they in 1 program? or seperate... just wondering cus if there will be 2 files for each subtitle or will vsconv implement the timetable in the file which vsrip created.
I guess I will find that out once look into it...
thanks alot.. I will have it a go
a small wondering tho, when adding a new sub from an srt text file using the SRT2SUP tool, choosing BMP. Will that be enough for scenarist? it creates a bmp ugly picture *lol* for every text line in the movie

Yes OCR sucks but I'm not referring to OCR, SubRip will also save to bitmaps, which is what you want.
vsrip.exe will be used to rip a .sub and idx (2 files only) from the DVD. This will contain the subs as they are on the DVD.
vsconv.exe will extract out the subtitles from the .sub and .idx. The output consists of a bitmap for each subtitle and a .sst file for each stream. The sst file contains a listing of all the bitmaps and their display times for a given stream. It's simply then a case of using import->subtitles in Scenarist.
It's probably easiest for you though if you just install VobSub, and use "VobSub Configure" to get sub/idx and then SubResync to get bmps/ssts.
Never used SRT2SUP but yes you want a bitmap for every single subtitle. I'd hope there is a Scenarist preset because you want the right colours and an sst etc. If srt2sup doesn't work out you can also use MaestroSBT, which definately will. You just need to convert the srt to ssa (substation alpha format) first (e.g. using Subtitle Workshop), because MaestroSBT only supports ssa input.

if your are using ntfs (btw: is there still someone who isn't?), save the .bmp into a compressed directory. this brings hundreds of mb to a couple dozen.

it is veru difficult to find the program vsconfig.... only found an exe file and starting that it will complain about missing dll file, I downloaded it and another ordinary program error occurs.... obviously need to install it fully but cannot find it :(
I am completely lost with VobResync...... how do I do the bmps from the sub/IDX files??.. lol.. so crazy

vsrip.exe and vsconv.exe are available here:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli
I've never had any problems with dll errors.
With SubResync, just open the idx, select the desired stream on the left (e.g. 00-English), hit save as, select location and change the save as type to Scenarist.

Hi SidDan,
If you have a SRT file remember that Srt2Sup can render these as Bitmaps, Yo might need to change the format of the SRT file before you can then add these subtitles to Scenarist.
Just a thought!

Srt2Sup, thanks for you noticeing this thread :) ...
but when I do that I think... I belive at least that there will be only bitmaps with no timeline.... like an extra "sst" file

Hi,
No, you get a matching SRT file that contains the times and links to the bitmaps.

hmmmm, now this is too strange
When I finally got scenarist to accept the sub files by changing 3 numbers from the sst file it now gives me an error when multiplexing.. it does also complain it cannot find some of the sub picture files at the end... seems like it wants more sub picture bmp files than what there is.
anyways,, here is the error message once it starts to multiplex
"
Info Multiplexing
Info Multiplexing VOB Main Stream
Error Cannot open subpicture file (C:\Project\Johnny\scen\johnny Cache\Encoded Files\VTS_01_0_0883_1.sp)

I belive I can multiplex the files when I do not have the subtitles involved

strange... and alltho I selected from the very beginning I only need 1 titleset... in the output I get each vob file for every PGC....
dang dang...
I have been searching and all but isnīt there really a good guide starting from DVD2DVD-r using scenarist and to have all the PGC in the movie titleset for a final output with subtitles?

hmmm,, I think I litterally screw this. for 6 months I haveīnīt been able to do a backup of my way and there is always something that doesnīt end up correctly. so I guess I just end up with the basic Shrink with deep analysis which many say it is very good.
Why I wanted to trouble myself in the first place was because I wanted to add an extra foreign subtitle... which took me some time to learn.... but now I am stuck with the scenarist and I donīt really think I will even try the BIG 3

sometimes that error occurs when you run out of free space on the hdd while compiling (keep in mind that Scenarist creates temp files equal to the size of the final output files while it's compiling), so if you had say, less than 8 gigs of space on your hdd before starting the compile, that may be your issue.
btw: titlesets have multiple pgcs :)

hmm, I had alot of free space tho,, over 10 gb
and you said titlesets hane multiple pgcs... I know. and it doesnīt explain why it created a vob file for each pgc since they all should include in the VOb of the movie...
never mind tho, thanks

Sometimes I get that kind of error, it seems that scenarist just gets mad and wont read that file....
Scenarist reads the BMPs and then creates its own BMPs in the mux folder (just check the path).
It appears there is an error while reading one of its own files.
This happens when scenarist actually cannot render that BMP into its own BMP system. It doesnt matter if that sub just says 'Hi!' or a bunch of lines....
The only thing I know can be done is just finding the last subtitle file (the one inside the mux folder) duplicate it, and change the name of the file, so scenarist thinks the file was succesfully encoded. Only problem is... is that the Last subtitle will be displayed instead of the original one (instead of saying lets say: 'How are you?' it will say 'Hi!' which was the subtitle before 'How are you?')
Hope I explained myself.
This is a workaround. If anyone knows how to FIX this problem, it would be a lot better of course.
