XVID on Philips DVP642

I just downloaded AutoGK 1.19 to try out xvid playback on my new DVP642. I converted a movie using all the standard setting and burned it to a cd. It plays back fine on the PC but on on this player the picture doesn't look right. It looks like the picture is embossed. Kind of looks psychedelic. Sound is fine.

Any ideas what might be happening? Is there some setting changes I can make in AutoGK that will help?

I don't think that would be XVID related, but more an AutoGK issue. You might try posting this in the Gordian Knot Development area and include the AutoGK logfile.

By the way, I have the DVP642 and haven't had any problems playing XVID.

How about Qpel and GMC? According to an owner of DVP642, the manual says "GMC (Global Motion Compensation) and Q-Pel (Quarter Pixel) not supported". Did you try to play files encoded using these features?

I don't know which chipset your Philips standalone uses. If it's the ESS chipset, then you have to install AutoGK with the special ESS option. This forces AutoGK/XviD to use either the MPEG or H.263 matrices. The default matrices for AutoGK are HVS_Best and Better, which the ESS chipset standalones don't play back very well.

Thanks everyone for all the replies. This turned out to be the problem. Installed AutoGK with the ESS patch and all is well now.

I am a happy man! Now I can compare same movie with Divx 5.1.1 (made with (Dr. Divx) and see if there is any diff. between xvid and divx.

Oh yeah! I forgot about the ESS option at install. To answer Jawor, I never encode with qpel or gmc and I'm sure this player doesn't support them. I have no use for them as I encode at a high quality level without much regard to filesize....I know you are all about fitting them on 1 CD which could use the help of GMC and qpel so this player wouldn't be for you.

Anyone tried XCDs with this player yet. Or, perhaps ogg audio with AVI container.

This sounds pretty useful to me too as I've a DVD737 (Ess chipset).
But what about on quality's side? That is to say: using MPEG or H.263 matrices would be likely to bring about a loss in quality ?
Last but not least: would this patch help solving XVID "b-frames issue" with these players?
