View Full Version : QuEnc: Could not open video codec

Just figured I'd keep this in the correct category, since nwg told me that it's a QuEnc problem that's being figured out. I originally posted under DVD Rebuilder.
I've been trying to burn a backup of Bad Boys II. I have no problem ripping it with Decrypter, and the first stage of Rebuilder is no problem. When I get to about 90% of encoding however, there are a few Video Codecs that cannot be opened. When it gets to the rebuilding stage, I get the following..."Error in Update IFO Shouldn't happen-contact developer"
I'm using QuEnc with the program, I have the newest versions of everything, including the Donald Graft version of mpeg2dec3.dll
Can anyone give me some advice?
-Thanks

Could you try the same disc with Quenc 0.45 and DVD-RB 0.43?
I just realised that I didn't get it until I upgraded to Quenc 0.47 amnd DVD-RB 0.45.

No dice...I originally tried before I downloaded the updates, so the newer/older version made no difference. Is this a bug with just certain movies? I'm new at this, but I had no problems with the first movie I processed.
Try the new version of Quenc 0.49. The problem is fixed.

I've got it, and not a problem yet. Thanks.

One problem fixed, another found. I get that error they're talking about over under DVD-RB...0006:DVD-RB has found an inconsistency in source data between the PREPARE and REBUILD phases. Aborting...
One day I'll get these backups on disc:D
I get this error too when I have a frame rate of 60fps coming from my AVS script. If I output 30fps with everything else the same, it is OK. Does QuEnc support all the legal MPEG2 frame rates?
EDIT: This rate requires MP:HL. I suppose QuEnc does only MP:ML.
This error is caused when 2pass is used on an mpeg2 segment below a certain bitrate. The bitrate required varies depending on the framerate, resolution and number of frames (although it alsways seems to be the same for any combination of the three).
@neuron2: You should be able to encode that 60fps clip but will probably need to increase to bitrate or turn 2pass off.
@neuron2: It should support 60 fps. Was it 60 fps or 60000/1001 fps? I've fixed the problem with 60000/1001 for the next release. But 60 should have worked...

Thanks, guys. Yes, assumefps(60) works, but assumefps(60,1001) does not.
EDIT: Thanks for this great application, Nic!

Another..."Could not open video codec. Please take a note of all settings and report to Nic"
Clever addition to the error:)
I'm not sure what settings you want, but currently, bitrate is at
393, Trellis and 2 pass are checked, as well as VBR and High Quality.
I notice the new version of QuEnc, but the link wasn't linking:D
I'll try that again later.
Edit here, just to mention another error when the bitrate hit 796.

I'm having the same problem using Quenc v.049 and Rebuilder v.046 backing up Band of Brothers Disc 4. It displays the error at the last... uh VOB if that's the correct term... that it tries to encode. My settings is 2 Pass Encoding, Better quality, and Trellis Quant... basically all the goodies turned on.
I believe the last VOB thingie is just a very short blank screen, but I really don't know. I know BOB has a such a thing linked to each of the two large movie files when I check it out using Ifoedit.
I've used Rebuilder and Quenc since Rebuilder v0.41 and Quenc v0.45. I backed up BOB disc 1-3 just fine using these programs. I think I started having trouble with this error after Quenc v0.45, but it might have been after Quenc v0.46. It seems that it was after you added the higher quality settings and Rebuilder incorporated them into the interface. I'm thinking this because I was happy with the normal quality and was excited about getting even better quality :D However, I've had these errors ever since trying to use those better quality settings with Rebuilder. They always come at the end of the encoding process.
Should I revert back to Quenc v0.45 or v0.46 or try the new release, v0.50? Let me know how I can help, however it does take about 10 hours to backup this BOB disc 4 using my Athlon XP 1600+.
Quenc 050 doesn't work at all with DVD-RB for me. It just skips encoding the segments. I have had to go back to Quenc 049.
Please try 0.51...that might help...Please let me know. :)

I'll try the newest version when the link allows me to download and post back with what happened tommorrow after the backup attempt.
Thanks!
I tested several clips and the required bitrate to successfully encode seems to be directly proportional to to the framerate. This ratio is dependent on the number of frames in the clip. For example:
1 frame: X=(fps)*~51.9
2 frames: X=(fps)*~39.29
3 Frames: X=(fps)*~15.9
I haven't done much testing beyond that. Not 100% sure on those numbers above (+/-1 or so) but they get you pretty good results in locateing the fail point for the bitrate (+/- 10 or so). Hope this info helps...
(Oh, and this was using .50. Haven't been able to get .51 yet.)

I can't seem to download the Quenc v0.51. Tried all evening, but no luck

Still no luck, Nic. The 'could not open video codec' hits in the same spot as before, even with .51

I got the same error too, trying to encode Star Wars II with
DVD-RB .46 at the end of the movie the last AVS
DVD-RB .46
QuEnc .51
HQ
VBR
2-Pass
Trellis
DC=10
GOP=18
Well, I'm patiently waiting for the next version in which Nic says this error wil be "definitely fixed".

I too am getting the same problem when two pass encoding is used on a small number of frames. At least the workaround is easy. Just use one pass encoding on the clips that get the error.

How do you do that?

I assume that you are using DVD Rebuilder like I am.
While the Quenc error message is up, pause DVD Rebuilder by clicking on it's Stop/Pause button.
Close Quenc by clicking OK on the error message.
In DVD Rebuilder under Options->Quenc Options, check the single pass encode option.
Restart the encode by clicking on the Encode button. DVD Rebuilder will start to encode again. DVD Rebuilder will ask if you want to resume from the previous encode. Click on yes to do so. Only let it encode the segment that you got the error message with. Press the Stop/Pause button to stop DVD Rebuilder. Press the Quenc Quit button if is encoding a segment that you did not have a error with.
In DVD Rebuilder, uncheck the single pass encode option and click on the Encode button and resume from the previous encode again.
By doing it this manner only the short segments which cause the error message in Quenc will be encoded using one pass (which should be no big loss) and the remaining will be encoded using two passes.

I'm getting this error when trying to send QuEnc a non-standard framerate via Rebuilder (trying to do IVTC). Is there a way to get QuEnc to ignore this?
What is the frame rate exactly? (and how is the framerate derived...i.e. 29.97 is 30000/1001 )
