View Full Version : Pause/Stop question

Backing up the Black Adder box R2 and getting the "pause/stop problem".

The DVD starts off by playing a 15sec company logo, right after that it stops. If I hit "play" the menu starts rolling and everything's fine. I've come across this problem before but those times I had usually done some other thing wrong or chose some other way of backing-up, but now I wanna deal with it.

The disc consists of two VTS sets. All the goods are in VTS1 except that starting logo which is the only pgc in VTS2.

Eyes´ solution to this, taken from his knowledgebase, didn't help as the restricted angle value was already 0.
Blanking the entire VTS will cause the disc not to play at all I guess...

Any suggestions?

This could be a couple things

1) If you used ReAuthorist to author, it sometimes uses a still track as dummy for a missing file. still tracks REQUIRE you to press Play/Enter to continue - by changing this to a slideshow track, you can get around that

Another option I could over is to go into the VIDEO_TS.IFO file and modify the "First Play PGC" from what it currently is to direct it to the main menu directly thus skipping anything between - you can find this info by looking in 2cool's cheat lists in the Advanced Authoring forum

Thanks! I had no idea where to start!

Sounds a bit tricky but I'm sure that the search-button will assist me :)

if so, could you please expand on your experiences so that other forum members can benifit.

I've tried changing the first play to point to menu using 2cools guide and it did not work for me. Has anyone been able to actually do this and have it work?

How do you change a track to a slide show track?

@ jel

Shortly after my above post I had to take a bit of a time-out from backing up, but then I saw your post and just had to press on!

Problem solved. I tried scenaid for the first time and the pause just went away :)

2cools cheat sheets are excellent for removing or skipping unwanted warnings, trailers, etc at the beginning, however, be warned, as you've found out, amending the first play pgc using 2 cools cheat sheets does not always work and I have not figured out the rules that control this and worse, it will often work when you play it back on the pc through either ifoedit or whatever dvd software you use but will not load up on a standalone, best to burn to rw to test.

If you find the warnings and or trailers have their own VTS set then the foolproof way to remove them is to replace with a dummy *_1.vob (either PAL or NTSC) which has a split second blank movie in it. You have to strip it out in ifoedit and copy the new files accross (sorry cant remember where I found out how to do this, maybe someone else can provide a link or something if they know). But the point is, this does not affect the structure of the dvd, it still plays the warning, except this time its a split second blank. I have never had a dvd fail after I have done this.

Another great benefit of this is to reduce the size of the authored files. Using it to repace a 20mb studio logo down to 10k blank might just get you under the max burn size if your project went a little over!

Cheers ears

(will post info about replacing blank vobs when I can explain it better, that's if the mods don't slate me for butchering!)

Well as long as it is about removing a logo i won't butcher you, so to speak. Although I don't see any use in that besides the reason you mentioned: gaining some space on a slightly overshot project.

And coming back to the initial question:
the pause problem is usually caused by restricted cells as you can find in the knowledge base (RA only problem). I can't remember occasions where this wasn't the cause.

Changing a still track to slide slow usually works great. Unfortunately you cannot change a track form still to slide (or someone has to clear that up for me :D). You have to create a new track manually set it to slide and set the desired length (from ifo). Then you have to replace the current track (still) in the scenario editor with your new slideshow). Requires some knowledge, but is doable of course.

Found a thread related to the subject: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=75824

Looks like the problem is that some commands that are needed before reaching the menu are skipped. What a nightmare it seems to hunt them down and fix in IfoEdit.

It seems that even if you replaced the still track with a slide track that play would not continue to the menu because of the missing commands. I'm I missing something?

I've had this problem about 3 times and each time I ended up manually re-authoring the whole thing after giving up.

This is one hard nut to crack! There must be a better way.

I never ever had missing commands. If this happens i think it's an user error somewhere along the way.

@raster

I have also done this DVD (PAL version too) and I have replaced the logo/warning using method I mentioned above, learn how to do it here...

http://www.deano.dsl.pipex.com/backup/ifoedit.htm

Don't change the first play item, just replace the logo with the blank vob.

The benefit of this is that it won't change the structure, it will still play the logo (but now its a blank vob).

Hope it works out for you.

Your right, it was some user error though I don't know what I did. Anyway, I authored a blank bitmap and replaced the logo with that and IFOUpdated and it worked!

@Chubmeister

Thanks for the link. I tried this method also and it worked. I would have never thought of doing it this way and I like this method better than using IFOUpdate.
