Hi

Im having problem encoding uncompressed AVI with MS RLE codec. I can select that codec in Vdub but when i try to save it i get message saying "error getting compressor output format size" Anyone know what im doing wrong or is there any application besides vdub that can save to MS RLE AVI?

I'm not even going to ask why you would want to destroy your uncompressed AVI source by using that old codec... :D

Anyhow, my understanding is that the MS RLE codec will only accept 8-bit colormapped images, and there is absolutely no way to create such a sequence with VirtualDub. However, I'm pretty sure that some of the high-end programs like Premiere or Ulead can do it.

To see what a codec can handle:
in the "Compression" menu of VDub, beside the Codecs list -> "Codec limitations", can help you.

In general, the limitations are bit-depths (i.e. number of colours) and size of the video-frame (length and/or width must be multiples of 4, 8, 16 or... etc.).

But... as fccHandler said... you shoudn't use such an obsolete codec... If you want to encode "losslessly", try HuffYUV. If you want to decrease the video file-size, try DivX or Xvid. The results will, in both case, be much more good!

Jon

I imagine the MS RLE codec may still be the best choice to convert FLI/FLC movies (remember those?) or animated GIFs to AVIs losslessly. Huffyuv would first need to expand the 8-bit images to 24-bit, then it might compress that by roughly 50%. At least in this example, MS RLE would surely be the winner.

if u need lossless or visually-lossless compression, then try new version of Alprysoft Lossless codec 2.0... seems cool :)
