Hello,
we are trying to copy our old personal VHS records to DVD, work on them and burn to CD. Now we all right get the video with DVD decrypter and Gordianknot, but the audio file is not coupled to the video in the AVI file, but on a separate track (as background music or comment) and not divided into chapters, so when we cut images the sound is not cut - impossible to make a movie this way. Are there any solutions?

Hello, and welcome to Doom9's forum.

If your source is DVD, then you should be using DVD Decrypter in IFO mode. In IFO mode, DVD Decrypter defaults to a single PGC (and will choose the longest automatically). You may select alternative PGCs, if any, and you may also select to rip a specific set of chapters, or an individual Chapter if you wish. You may also rip by Cell(s) in the same manner.

Once ripped, the resulting VOB set on hard drive will have a single angle of just the PGC, Chapter(s), or Cell(s) you've selected. The audio streams will also be in the VOB set, and will be in sync. DVD2AVI will show you the audio delay in milliseconds when demuxed.

Hello and thank you for your reply!
I all right rip a chapter or Cell with the IFO mode chosen as said in the manual, to for example a file called: VTS_01_0.IFO and VTS_01_1.VOB, Then I choose DVD2AVI, option "demux all tracks", When reading the d2v file, there already is no sound. Then I click save/encode to .avs file, then in the Gordianknot DivX window, if I let in "audio1" audio desactivated, I have no sound in the AVI file. If I choose "mix only" the result is the same, the audio delay by default is 0ms, and no sound is in the AVI file. The only way I get any sound is to choose a separate sound file, but then I cannot work on the video.
Sorry, I'm only a beginner and my English is not perfect, so perhaps I don't describe the difficulties the right way.

"Demux all tracks" will place each soundtrack into a separate file in the same folder as the .d2v file.

When setting up the encoding batch job in GKnot, select the "Audio 1" tab, select the appropriate soundtrack file. You can "just mux" to combine the retain the soundtrack in it's current format, such as Dolby Digital (.ac3) or Linear PCM (.wav), or you can have Gknot convert to .mp3 first.

Be aware that there are some soundtrack formats on DVD, such as .mp2 (MPEG-1 layer II) that are not supported in .avi containers. These must be converted to .mp3 or another valid sound format.

Gknot's batch operations occur in the following order: Optionally: Convert audio to .mp3 (if selected) Optionally: encode end-credits video with low quality (if selected) First pass of main movie Second pass of main movie Mux the completed movie (combined with optional separate end credits) with the sound file. GKnot will set the delay automatically based upon the delay in the soundtrack's file name.I hope that helps you understand the process.

Hello,
thanks again for your reply. As I see, I did the things right. My problems seems to be elsewhre. When I play the resulting avi files - I get 2 of them - :
in Windows Media player, the file something.avi plays back video and sound OK, the file something_Movie.avi plays only video.
But in Pinnacle Studio, where I want to work on the file: something.avi has only video, something_Movie.avi doesn't open at all. So I have to open the sound file AC3 or mp3 that I got with the avi files, but it doesn't open as soundtrack with the video as original sound, just as a separate track as used for mixing background music or comments.
I include here the log file, if it can help?

C:\VIDEO\essai1804\doom3004_Movie.avi is an interim file. It contains video only. It is the result of your two-passes of DivX 3.11 encoding in Nandub, and there is no audio processing during those stages (#3 and #4 in the steps I described above).

C:\VIDEO\essai1804\doom3004.avi should be the complete file.

Since doom3004.avi plays properly in Windows Media Player, I would think you ran GKnot properly. But you need to understand that Gordian Knot's default conversion is to VBR MP3, which may not be an acceptable sound format by Pinnacle Studio. I don't know for certain, as I have never used that software. If that's the case, one workaround would be to use CBR MP3, if that is an audio format acceptable to Pinnacle Studio software. In any case, the soundtrack you've converted in Gknot, C:\VIDEO\essai1804\doom3004 AC3 T01 2_0ch 256Kbps DELAY 0ms.mp3, should be exactly the same as the soundtrack in the doom3004.avi file.

NOTE: It is probably a mistake to convert from DVD (MPEG-2) to an .avi with MPEG-4 as an interim step, and then to process the video, once again, in Pinnacle Studio. Each step in the process is lossy, and you will degrade image quality. You would be better off using the MPEG-2 video from the DVD directly with Pinnacle Studio, skipping the Gknot step entirely.

Hello again,
so it becomes obvious that the problem is only with Pinnacle ... unfortunately it doesn't recognise the files directly from a DVD, so I searched for a solution on the Web and came across Gknot which seems great for duplications. I'm afraid the solution will be to buy the converter hardware letting us record directly to avi fom the VHS tape.

It is possible to "frameserve" MPEG-2 video from .d2v projects using VFAPI or AviSynth; AviSynth scripting is how GKnot uses Nandub or VirtualDubMod to encode video. The scripts are in text files (.avs) that appear to be .avi files to many encoders or .avi players. Gknot places resizing and other commands into these text files, and sends the text files to the video encoders.

If you get video when you open C:\VIDEO\essai1804\doom3004.avs in Pinnacle Studio, then you can use DVD2AVI/Gknot to create your scripts, and just "Save" rather than "Save & Encode."

You will need to manage your audio separately, and you can use Gknot for this purpose. Click on the encoder tab, then click the "Add Job" button, and select the "Audio 1" tab in the pop up window. You can select VBR MP3 (adjustable bitrate) or CBR MP3 (constant bitrate) and then click the "Add Job to Queue" button at the bottom.

In this manner, Gknot would become a script generator and audio transcoder for you.

thank you, but avs doesn't open in Pinnacle either.
I think I have to search for another solution to work oàn my old home videos. For simply duplicating videos the programs work alll right.
