Convert VOB files into Mpeg

I've got a dvd that I own that I would like to take the menus and extra stuff out of so I don't have to wait and wade through menus to get to the shows.

The dvd is a TV show with several episodes and I'd like to just put them onto a 4.7Gb dvd and just seperate the different episodes as chapters.

I can rip the episodes into VOB files, but they don't cut into episodes. By that I mean that one VOB file may have all of episode one and 5 min of episode two. I would like to know how to take the episodes and keep them dvd quality and put them onto a 4.7Gb dvd just by themselves.

I have a dvd making program that would let me use AVI files or MPEG files and put them onto a dvd like I want to. I can encode each episode into an AVI file that looks almost as good as the dvd, but this process takes a very long time for each episode. Is there a free program that would take the VOB files, let me cut them into each episode and save them as MPEG files, without taking a long time.

It would be fine if I had to put half of the episodes onto one dvd and the other half onto a second, just a long as they look dvd quality.

Any suggestions?

hi, what program did you use to rip the vob files? im pretty sure ifo mode in dvd decrypter would do what you need..

You can use program called MPEG-VCR. You can load VOB file with it, cut what you don't need and save it to MPEG file without re-coding. After that, use DVD making program to make new DVD without loosing DVD quality. I think you should rip original DVD into one VOB file.

I would use tmpg dvdauthor. It has, IMHO, the finest cutting tool and is simple to use. You can download a 15 day fully functional trial from Pegasys.

I used DVD Decrypter to rip the vob files, although I do have SmartRipper also.

sorry, i just thought you wanted to rip it into different parts (so one vob set didnt have 2 episodes in it, etc) i missed the other part of needing mpegs.

I think he means to say he would resort to encoding to MPEG or AVi if you had to, but you prefer not to because the process is slow. The reason that VOB1 has 5 minutes of episode 2 is because each VOB is default size to 1GB. Meaning that each VOB doesnt care what chapters or titles it defines. It just part of the whole.

What you might consider to do is open the entire disc in DVDshrink and chop it into the appropriate sections (very easily done). Then simply back it up with or without compression as needed. This will create a complete DVD titleset with each episode as a title, ready to burn onto a blank DVD+/-R or RW Disc. And it will be a bit-perfect copy of the original DVD.

You could simply skip titles to skip episodes. The original chapters in each episode will still function as chapters. This would be a relatively quick, 1 step process (unless you require a bit of compression to squeeze more onto the DVD.)
