hallo again!

first of all i must say i really like "hfe2". but for my taste the
noise pattern is a little bit too visible.

but anyway, i wanted to report a bug i've noticed on my computer.
i don't know if it has something to do with my machine or windows
installation. i'm running xp and i am using media player classic.

the "bug" is that when i enable hfe2 the handles owned by media player
classic increase propertional to the frames decoded by the player. so
the handle count increases by approximatly 25 handles per second.
(pal source ;))

i think it has something to do with the "rv10hfe registry key".

hope you can fix it or it only happens on my pc.

cheers, chris

ps.: thanks for the codec properties explained thread! ;)

chris: thanks for the feedback. HFE2 has not yet been released officially, so you never know which improvements may still be added..

Re: MPC # handles bug -- very strange. No one reported this before, and it does not happen on our systems, but I will take another look. Is this on WinXP w. MPC 6.4.8.2?

<< Is this on WinXP w. MPC 6.4.8.2?
it's winxp and mpc 6.4.2.8... let's have a look - yes it is!
today i've downloaded a new version of mpc in hope that the
problem might be fixed, but it wasn't. so it must be someting
else...

i was watching a movie and taskinfo 2003 (task manager) complained
about too many handles and i had a closer look. the problem was mpc.
i tried out several things and came to the conclusion, that this
kind of behavior was caused by having hfe2 enabled.

the info taskinfo gave me was, that all the opened handles had the
following property:

-type: key
-name: hklm\...\rv10hfe

i hope this helps!

It seems that I was late.

Is Ellysian good at recognition that it is HFE1?
What are Ellysian and the decisive difference among HFE2 in that case?
Is the completely uninstallable experiment module offered?

I am sorry to be only a question.

I don,t know if I get well your question, but Ellysian is on the encoder side, while HFE is a post-filter.

From HFE1 vs HFE2, HFE2 has a stronger effect and some sharpening. IIRC, HFE1 was an alpha.

I finally tried HFE2 the other day. It's a good postfilter but the aliasing on edges is undesirable and distracting.

You can turn it off or minimize it. Just use my GUI :)

superdump

I was using your GUI to activate it and set the levels. If you turn down the sharpness the effect is hardly noticeable/worthwhile and if you turn up to noticeable levels it aliases too much. Maybe if I force directx rendering and force FSAA that would help? :)

There are two effects in HFE2: the sharpening and high frequency enhancement are completely separate. On a high quality and/or large display, both should provide a nice benefit but the sharpening is a pure post process, whereas the HFE is both a post process and enhancement of existing information. How much sharpening looks best seems to be a matter of taste. If aliasing is too visible, perhaps none at all. HFE is not always very visible on CRT displays. On my displays I like HFE + sharpening at 3-5 or so.

Sharpen @ 3-6 is very noticable on my CRT in 1600x1200 :D

HFE2.1 released:

092504 Released 2.1
Significantly improved performance:
previously the HFE2 decoder DLL had worse decoding
performance than the normal decoder, even with all
features disabled. This new version has the same
performance as normal decoder, with all features
disabled. HFE2 causes only a little extra CPU use.
Sharpening causes a little more.
Also: better installer (example provided by Sirber)

Download : Helix Binaries (https://helixcommunity.org/beula/download/)

I noticed the HFE2 decoder DLL had performance problems with D-C's excellent HD demo clips (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=81577). This release should bring performance back on par with the normal decoder DLL as well as mplayer (and its older DLL).

About sharpening, it uses 50% more ressources than whitout :)

[edit]

For evil codec pack users, the installer may not work with your system.

HFE2 by itself is relatively moderate in the extra CPU usage it adds, in fact, it is implement such that it filters directly into video memory. Sharpening adds more, but 50% sounds high. In one example I tried, CPU use was 20% without sharpening, 30% with. If you measure the that difference in %, I guess it's 50%, but the difference between 30 and 20 is only 10% :)

The installer lets you browse to where you have the decoder codecs...
The default location is not auto-detected, but set for RealPlayer.

On anime source:

Whitout: 35%
With: 65%

So... it's more around 30% more :)

Seems the new updated DLL reduce CPU playback a lot. I will update soon HFE GUI with some missing things. A minor but usefull update. Will post it tomorrow.

Changelog
2.12: 2006-01-05
Fixed problem with two reg keys not being closed.

Download : Helix Binaries (https://helixcommunity.org/beula/download/)

This bug could result in thousands of open handles and potentially a memory/performance problem after a while of playing RealVideo, both in RealPlayer and alternative players, if HFE was installed. I discovered the bug with TaskInfo 6.x running in the background, and it kept warning me number of handles exceeded...

hi karl!

remember my posts back in 2004...?

http://forum.doom9.org/showpost.php?p=526114&postcount=57
http://forum.doom9.org/showpost.php?p=526445&postcount=59

this bug made it impossible for me to use hfe2. now ~18 month later it has been fixed. i even mentioned the use of taskinfo. i find this a little bit irritating that now, that much later, you've discovered exactly the same bug - exactly the same way. i've somehow the feeling that my bug-report back then hasn't been taken serious at all.

anyway, it's fixed and that's fine.

regards, chris

eMotionEstimation: I apologize for doing such a bad job in reproducing your bug back then, and then forgotten all about it :( To prevent this, I should have asked you to file the bug in the Helix bug report system, or done so myself, as I have usually done for bugs reported in this forum.

Sirber
6th January 2006, 16:12
I don't want to bash or anything, but reporting a bug on Helix doesn't mean it will be fixed...

Still no working OGG input in producer :(

karl_lillevold
6th January 2006, 16:19
of course not, but it is a good reminder. OGG input is a Producer feature request btw, not a bug, and probably down prioritized based on how many would actually use such a feature.

As far as I know, there are currently no open _codec_ bugs.

@karl:
no need to apologize. i just felt like saying this because back then i really wanted to use hfe2. anyway realvideo is great even without it! we need to thank you for making realvideo codec technologie freely available. big thanks!

regards, chris

ps.: i'm really curious what real comes up with next... :)
