For those who want to test an alternative to the directx players:
MPlayer-1.0pre4 is out. You can get it from
mplayerhq.hu (http://www.mplayerhq.hu).
For those who do not know mplayer (The Linux Media Player, not M$ Media Player).
It is a very versatile comand-line player with GUI (but not all options can be switched from within the GUI), that has ports to lots of platfroms: Linux, Windows, Mac, Free-/OpenBSD, Sun Solaris etc.
that can read through many different sources and decode lots of codecs through libavcodec and even use the libraries of many other codecs (including e.g. real, quicktime, On2)
There are precompiled versions for win32 on the ftp:
ftp://ftp.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/releases/win32-beta/
The codec dlls have to be downloaded from mplayerhq.hu and be placed to the codecs subdirectory (win32 only). Drop any file you want to playback on the executeable.
