Hello, this is my first post here and I'm happy to be a part of this forum :) By the way, I apologize in advance for the name I chose...couldn't think of anything better at the time...

Here it goes.

I have a LG4081B. I was able to make a working backup (the first one I ever made !!!) of a commercial DVD using DVDSHrink, IMGTool and DVDdecrypter (for burning) following the guide. I made a backup of the main movie only. However, I'm not sure if the original DVD was a DVD-5 or DVD-9. So, since it worked well the first time I was wondering if the same process (DVDShrink, IMGTool, DVDdecrypter) would work with a DVD-9 assuming that the DVD I backed up was in fact a DVD-5. In other words, could I burn with DVDdecrypter a ISO file made using first DVDShrink and IMGTool of a DVD with dual layers ?

Since I'm a newbie I don't know if this is a dumb question or not (please don't flame me :( ) . But, I would greatly appreciate any advice I could get. I hope I was clear enough in my question and thanks in advance for helping me out.

There's no such thing as a dumb question (well, unless you're trying).

The process you describe will certainly work for backing up a DVD-9 to a DVDR. That's what DVDShrink is designed to do.

However, DVDShrink does have it's limits. You don't want to commit the backup to disk till you're sure the quality is high enough. Be aware of the compression ratios that DVDShrink is showing you, and preview your backups in a software player before you burn. After you've done a few (dozen) you'll get a feel for what compression levels you're comfortable burning without previewing.

Also, just as a side note, DVDShrink can backup directly to an ISO. That can save you some time (you don't have to run ImageTool afterward).

Thanks very much for the reply. I tried it and it works fine. Concerning the compression settings, I was impressed by the results. Of course, I only backed up the main movie so it didn't have to be compressed as much.
