View Full Version : ati has horrible overscan. Fix?

I've had a radeon 9600 pro quite some time now. The problem is, when watching something on a TV in theater mode, there are two ways to do it, both of them are bad.

1. Enable overscan. This results in ~60 pixels (or was it 40?) being cut off on the borders. This is not anything like a regular DVD player. I was spoiled by my matrox g400 and I'm disappointed with my new radeon.

2. no overscan. Simply try to adjust the picture so as to remove the black borders. This works okay, but the picture has to be readjusted almost every time you play, especially if the next video being played is a different resolution than the previous video. In addition, the borders can't be removed in every case.

Have any other ati users out there had this frustrating situation? Have you managed to find a work-around?

Thanks,
gft

PS I'm using catalyst 4.4

I used the arrows to move the picture, but it doesn't work on the TV when in theatre mode. You have to be in clone mode.

This isn't a nice solution, because then you can't mess with your computer and expect the video to stay on the TV.

Thanks for pointing me to zoomplayer though. It might be useful for other things.

Cloning is no problem with zoomplayer, if that's what you mean. In theater mode, I can minimize the video window, yet the video still shows up on the TV. However, zoomplayer doesn't move the video on the TV when in this mode.

I found a STUPID solution. It really pisses me off that the drivers don't automatically resize the picture on the TV. If I open a video it is initially not sized properly on the TV. There is a big black bar on the bottom. If i then turn overlay on then off, the video is resized to fit the TV, except I reduce the horizontal size one notch. This seems to work almost all the time.

Why should I have to go through all that just to get a properly sized image? ATI obviously hasn't spent much time on this part of their drivers.

I have heard that there is a driver or something for the matrox board that will also work for the ATI9000 series. What you are dealing with is the video out is 640x480, not 720x480. There are no standards for overscan. All tv's and video monitors have it, even the new plasma and LEDs, so what you need is custom adjustment for your setup

I have downloaded it but have not tried it out. If you can't find it, reply back.
