I have tried this process on several DVDs and it works good for me.
I like my DVD backups with original functionality (menus etc.). I just remove trailer, languages, subtitles and some extras that I don't use.
Procedure:
1. Use DVDStrpper with DVDDecrypter to rip the DVD and remove unwanted extras and non-english menus.
2. Use IFOEdit to remove language packs as well as subtitle packs.
3. Use MenuEdit to block non-functinal buttons in the remaining menus.
4. Use DVDRerbuilder to compress the DVD (CCE 2.5).
This works charm and it is easy for beginners like me. Of course there are more than 4 programs involved (DVDDecrypter, CCE, Avisynth) but there are four steps.
Just my 2 c, any comments?

Many of us already do that. Except I like to strip streams using dvdshrink as that way theyre no longer selectable in the dvdplayer (makes for faster sub switching) and you can see more easily what track is what.

yeah i generally rip with dvd shrink (removing audio and subs) for the same reason Joergen said
then use vob blanker to remove the unwanted streams, (extras, trailers etc.)- i must admit i didn't know of menu-edit- will try that in future thanks :D
then whack it through DVD-RB of course!

I have been doing a practically identical procedure, because there isn't much excuse for not keeping the basic menus with scene selection capability.
IFOedit (Step 2) does the same thing as DVDshrink (removes language/subpicture streams completely) and is essential before using DVD-RB. I use DVDremake which is basically the same as MenuEdit, and is a great program for fixing buttons and removing portions of menu vobs.
I might switch to Shrink instead of IFOedit to do the stream removal because you can also transcode/compress menus/extras if you want to keep them all, which you cannot do in IFOedit.

After doing a little experimenting with Shrink, I noticed that the language streams still show up in the language selector in PowerDVD, they are just greyed out so they can't be selected. The latest version of Nero Recode, however, completely removes all evidence of the language streams. Call me a perfectionist, but I'll use Recode over Shrink since it completely removes them.

ah thats good to know- i haven't really used recode2 for dvd's (even though i've had it for ages  ) cos the decrypting element has been removed but just recently started using anydvd so that isn't an issue any more
thanks HanSolo00- i assume recode does have "no compression option"?

It is possible to set no compression with Recode. All you need to remeove the target size limit by unticking it. Then select 100% on the slider.
Shrink does remove all trace of the audio (including the ifo entries). However, it has happened when it hasn't worked for the the odd DVD. Also, try enabling logical remapping of audio streams in the preferences.

I know but are you sure that the video isn't touched?
Someone said the same thing about DVD2ONE but I've found that the video was somewhat modified (and gotten worse) by DVD2ONE although DVD size was set above the required (8Gb).

It is not touched, I have compared the results with the original.
