View Full Version : firmware-flashed lite-on DVDRWs endless reboot of win2k

I've got 2 Lite-On DVDR+-W drives, the LDW-411S and the LDS-811S. Both have had their firmware flashed to the latest update and now they will force the Win2K box on which they were flashed to reboot when it's finished its start sequence.

This mobo is the older version of Asus' A7N8X with the 1007 BIOS update.

What the heck causes this behavior and how do you prevent it? The CMOS was cleared and all Lite-On devices removed from the Hardware Manager. I've also tried attaching to the "other" IDE cable.

All indications are this is a Windows problem, not a hardware problem, as the reboot happens late in the Windows startup sequence. The mobo BIOS is happy with the drive and doesn't complain.

There must be some residual aspect of the previous installation which is confusing Windows. Perhaps it thinks there are multiple instances of the drive. Once, I tried to run the add/remove hardware wizard while the startup dequence was running and there was a message stating that multiple installations of hardware can't be run at one time. Since I hadn't tried anything other than opening the hardware wizard, this looks like an error created by windows and its rebooting due to the conflict and not showing that status.

Does anyone know how to cure this? Norton WinDoctor doesn't fix the problem, I've already tried.

Nope, darn it, they're hardware problems. Same endless rebooting when I put either drive on another mobo. WTF!!!

I dont know if you can find an earlier firmware but you could try to boot up into safe mode and reload the older firmware and see if it helps with the problem. Or if you are able to boot up in safe mode, try removing all the Lite-On drives from the hardware wizard.
