Yeah they beat them. It is old news on slashdot. But that has not stopped the Gmail hype if that is even what they are calling it any more.

Yeah, but the Gmail hype seems to be more about privacy now than anything. I read yesterday that a California state senator has introduced a bill that would require a very explicit Opt-in agreement for Gmail users, I wouldn't disagree if it was just for people who sign up, but it is written to include people who SEND email to a Gmail user too, which makes it unworkable.

The funny part is that Google isn't doing anything that can't be done already, they're just coming out and saying "our computers are going to scan your mail contents" and people are getting their panties in a twist. Meanwhile 99.999% of all email is sent in plaintext over the internet.

My brother has a spymac account - I dont see the need to have 1GB e-mail space. I dont receive big e-mails and I dont plan to keep em forever + I rather take 2 mb and be more secure / private than 1GB + LOTS of spying and ads :)

If you want to pay a bit I know somewhere you can get 20Gb email space with no privacy issues. :D But considdering that since 1993 I have probably not generated or recieved over 3Mb of email this is gonna take quite a while to fill. Whoa! Assuming that trend continues and I never delete anything it will take me almost 6 million years to fill it!

So, who's got Gmail?

I got an account a couple of days ago and I'm lovin it. It looks like Google is handing out the invites like candy. I used Hotmail for so long because that was my primary 'public' address, but gmail's interface and feature set is head and shoulders above hotmail (and it's not 95% spam). I've already started migrating some of my stuff over to Gmail.

Anyone else using it? What do you think?

Well, mail.ru has free unlimited e-mail account since 21.04.2004, as they said. More precisely the space can be increased manually after reaching some grade. It has Russian interface, but it's easy to use. They all alike. And advertising will not bother you, because it's mostly in Russian. :)

Yahoo went to 100MB last week, both will have a 2GB limit for pay subscribers.

I dislike Google's e-mail scanning. But I guess it's a great service if you use it for PGP encrypted mail only ;)

I haven't checked out Gmail, but you can use PGP encryption with it? That would really defeat the purpose of scanning you're emails if you can encrypt them before you send.

You can use GPG with anything you wish. Or PGP if you must. In fact I can talk to people via Jabber IM over ssl encrypted links using GPG/PGP encrypted text. Spiffy no?

The privacy concerns about "email scanning" on gmail are idiotic. Every ISP today scans your email when receiving it just to check it for spam or virus. Any company worth its weight is already scanning your emails to do profiling. They want to know what kind of advertising will be most effective against you. To believe anything else to to be naive. Having worked high up at MSN/Hotmail, I know how easy doing queries and sorting of email types would have been, and I am sure it was done.

If you want to make it difficult to scan your emails, use your own email server for sending/receiving. Anyone your email passes through can still scan it, they just have a harder time profiling you specifically. If you want to make it really hard, start encrypting your emails.

I agree Pamel. I wouldn't go so far as to say the arguments are idiotic though. They seem to be mostly made because of the principles of the situation, and not just googles specific actions. Unless your already using encryption your email is already 'public'. As long as Google keeps my info (pwds, CC #s, ect) private I don't have a problem with it.

I have it too. Its nice, but not great. So far there are no big ads trying to load, and thats the biggest thing. Hotmail let me search my inbox too, so its not like gmail has the big new feature I've been missing. I'm most interested to try out the threaded messages feature.

I have been using mail.ru for more than three years now and it is the most reliable free email provider I know. They offer pop3 and smtp access and do also have an english interface (http://eng.mail.ru). Every few months they send you some newsletter or similar, but I can't read it anyway :p
