How do I convert .dat files into .mpeg. I also want to merge them, preferably with the same program.

well you can rename the files to .mpg and most programs should work with them ok.

theres also a program called vcdgear which will convert them if you must. use google or such to search for it, its late and i am off to bed. :)

I have three .dat files that I want to put on DVD, but I don't want the three files on the disc as the movie pauses for a second or two when changing to the next file. I want to convert them to .mpeg so that I can merge them with TMPGenc.

VCDEasy has also a dat to mpeg converter build in. Look into the Tools of this app. You can download it at www.doom9.org

I tried to convert the .dat files with VCDGear, but when I selected the '.dat to .mpeg' option, it said that it was an invalid format or something, so I tried the '.mpeg to .mpeg' option and it worked fine, but TMPGenc won't open the converted file.

There must be some software out there that can convert .dat files to .mpeg files that are compatible with TMPGenc.

right click on the file and select "rename" in the window that p[ops up. the file is then selected and ready for name changing.

if you have extensions hidden(meaning windows doesnt display them) open a window and from the menu select "folder options", go to "view" and untick "hide extensions for know file types". done.
