Hi!
I´m from Portugal, which player would you recommend I get for Xvid?
I know no player that uses all the advanced options of xvid, will that lower the video playback quality a lot? Will new videos encoded that way be "viewable"??
Now I use a pc with tvout connected to the tv, good quality, but not progressive, and there´s always the humm of the pc in the background...

offtopic:Sorry about the crosspost on Xvid

Search at: http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers.php
I found 144 dvd-player. A couple of months ago it was fewer. A lot of them are available even in Portugal to buy. Good luck!

The quality won't suffer as a result of not using things like GMC or qpel unless you are really interested in small filesizes, where those advanced options can help. If you have videos encoded with the advanced options they will not playback correctly on most standalones. Mediatek based standalones ATM are compatible with qpel I believe, but there isn't any standalone capable of XVIDs GMC (I think).

What are the "standandards" these days for encoding movies? Do people generally use a lot of the advanced options ? (the most experienced ones... the ones who make the most backups)

I think you'll find that answer is as varied as the individuals who post here. There are alot of people who use all of the advanced features....some knowledgable people know exactly what the advanced features do and how to use them, but alot of people use them just because they are there. I really can only speak for myself....I don't use the "advanced" features such as qpel or gmc mainly because I don't want to deal with compatability issues. My encodes do not suffer at all and in fact are hard to distinguish from the source DVD....however, I encode at a fairly high quality (quantizer of 2, b-vops 1,1,1) without much regard to filesize.
