Hi

I did a fresh install of my OS (Win2KPro SP4), and am trying, as usual, to reduce the number of codecs installed.

So far I've only installed the xvid codec, XviD-1.0-RC4-05042004. I can playback xvid and divx5 movies with no problem, but I have nothing when I am trying divx3 files. No error messages in ZoomPlayer (as when no codec is installed), I only have the sound on a black screen. This happens with other people's movies, as well as the ones I know I have encoded myself with divx3 (divx3.11 alpha).

In the xvid decoder configuration app I have all three fourcc's checked, divx, dx50 and mp4v. With only xvid installed, when G-Spot encounters a div3 file it tells me 'codec not installed', fair enough. When I change the fourcc to 'divx' or 'xvid', it says it will use "AVI Splitter -> XViD MPEG-4 Video Decoder -> Overlay Mixer 2" to decode my file, still no image.

Is this behaviour normal? Is there anything special to configure in the xvid decoder, or I do have to install the divx3 codec because xvid can't do it? I assumed that since it can do divx5 it should cope with divx3 too...

divx3 is not mpeg-4 compliant, therefore a mpeg-4 decoder (like xvid) will not be able to play it

still there are 3 decoders which additionally implemented divx3 decoding support: ffdshow, divx5 and 3ivx decoder
