Whenever I convert ac3 to ogg, "surround 2" was always used. Now I have been converting to 5.1. However, at a .2 quality, the ogg file is about 200mb or so. I was used to 60mb with the surround2.

Is there anyway I can make my dvd rips have 5.1 audio, but with a smaller ogg size? I don't like sacrificing video quality... oh yeah and I use ogg machine/azits/besweet.

As mentioned in the Vorbis FAQ, vorbis has not yet implemented 5.1 channel coupling, and thus achieving good quality with vorbis, as you have discovered, will require a very high bitrate. If you want low bitrate and 5.1 sound and quality, vorbis simply isn't an option.

The currently best way to get 5.1 audio in AVIs is still using the AC3 track right from the DVD. You might downsize the track from 448 kbps to at least 384 kbps using the fixed BeSweet 1.5b26 with AC3Machine, but reencoding will always harm the quality.

If you may use more advanced containers instead of AVI, then you may try AAC...

This means: Using specific tools, you might be able to multiplex AAC audio into AVI, but other containers (e.g. MPEG4) shall be more suitable for this audio format.

And yes, ChristianHJW, Matroska will eat them all... ;)
