Tomb Raider 2 - HD-DVD

27.04.04 will be a great date in germany. On this day the frist HD-DVD will come out. I got my copy today.

So what is special with this HD-DVD. It is completely new!
It uses the WM9Codec and a resolution of 1280x544.

To play this disc You need a P4 2.4 GHz or a Athlon 2.400+, AGP8x Graficcard with 128 MB RAM, 512 MB RAM, 8x DVD drive, WinXP SP1 and Windows Media Player 9 Series.

I'll test now the disc and write a doc for the next upcoming Standard in the movie buisiness. Stay tuned.

He never said that WMP9 will be the next standard. And I thought AVC (or H.264, even though it isnt fully developed and it has bugs.)(for video) and AAC (for audio) will be used for HD-DVDs.

the official specs for hd-dvd are not finalized till now!
from what i read there are absolutely no plans to use wma9 pro, wma9 std, the .wmv container or the m$ drm system, but maybe only wmv9 (together with h.264 and mpeg-2) but even this wasnt decided till now

so to say as m$ wants to sell this as "hd-dvd", the chance is more than great that this so called "hd-dvd" will never be compliant to the hd-dvd standard and future hd-dvd players

so for me this is nothing more than a markting move from m$ to push its wm9 formats, misusing a very popular name for this: "dvd"

Hi Amnon82,

Is the disc encrypted like all the other HiDef WMV9 releases?

I currently have T2 Extreme in HD WMV9. But as I live in Europe and not in the US or Canada, I have to do all kinds of 'proxy' trickery to play it... so much so I've given up!

Is this similar to the Terminator 2 Extreme Edition release that had a HD WMV version on the 2nd disc? I have that in my Netflix queue, just to check WMV version. I already own the "Ultimate Edition" release, which is about as good as the movie can get on standard DVD.

You need internet access to play the T2 WMV, does this Tomb Raider 2 release need that for DRM junk too?

EDIT: looks like SeeMoreDigital responded as I typed. I had heard about all the proxy hoops you have to jump thru to get T2 to play out side the states, fortunately standalones won't be expected to have an internet connection for a long time yet, so I doubt that form of region control will make it into the final HD-DVD specs (or blue-ray or whatever is next).

I have to admit I like the idea that 'multi-format' standalone players incorporate some kind of network connection. As I like the flexibility that this type of connection brings.

What really worries me though, is that if M$ have their way, such a connection will be used to promote all forms of DRM.

We all know that current forms of region disc protection has failed - and thank god it has. But the idea of my stand alone player connecting to some proxy server somewhere every time I slip my disc into my player, frightens me greatly... talk about 'big brother'!

TombRaider 2 is encrypted. I tested it. It has a playtime till 25.05.2004. So I was scared! I changed the clock to Juni and removed my internet connection. I played the Disc again. Now it says playtime till 25.07.04 and so on ...

The new encryption don't need Internet anymore. On the disc are some Samples of the Standards I posted You. They are about 5 Min long but need many space. So if some one has space about 1 GB free I can upload this files to this space, cos they aren't encrypted...

How big are the file sizes. T2 (152min) was split into 7 parts and was 6.5GB?

Where can I get this disc(s) and how much was it?

i dont want to need an internet connection everytime i play a video checking everytime that i am really allowed to watch the movie, how i often i watch it aso...

its like if i had to connect to the internet whenever i read a book, so its possible to check whether i am allowed to read the book or not

The TombRaider 2 Collection Bundle will be sold on the 27.04.04 in Germany. The Movie is the german Cinema Version. So the Audiochannel is in German. The Price was for the 6 Disc Package 46.99 €

It is a preriod which continues day by day. Exactly one month after the date you playing it. I'll test this now.

Date of the creation of the file: 19.02.2004 23:00
Periode till 02.07.2004 (I changed the clock to 25.Juni 2004).
I changed now the clock again. Now to 31.12.2036. Now it won't play at all. Hmm maybe restarting the PC...

This is the answer. We're dealing with Version 2 of DRM.

drmv1.key is the key for DRM Version1
drmv2.lic is the file of the licenses
drmv2.licIndex must be some kind of Index
v2ks.bla is the version 2 key store. This is where all the keys are kept.
v2ks.sec hmm I don't know what this file is for ...

The license is inside the drmv2.lic file, which is a structured "DOC
file", meaning it can be accessed through the IStorage and IStream
interfaces (and it can be browsed by the Microsoft Visual Studio "DOC
File Viewer" tool if you're curious).

I found some funny out. If I kill the files I listed above in the DRM folder I must reload the DVD. Then I got the old periode till 02.05.04. Now I'm trying to do this with the date 31.12.2036 again and see what happend.

Microsofts HD WMV DVD

Eines vorab - dem Filmgenuss der von Microsoft vertriebenen HD WMV DVDs stehen einige kleine Stolpersteine im Weg. Zum einen sind die Leistungsempfehlungen immens - eine 3 Ghz CPU und eine 9500 oder höhere Radeon Grafikkarte (mit aktivierter Hardwarebeschleunigung) werden empfohlen. Zum anderen hat Microsoft seine DVD-9 Medien (die neben der WMV Version auch eine "normale" DVD Fassung auf einer separaten DVD enthalten) mit einem Lizenzschutz - dem Digital Rights Management (kurz DRM) - versehen. Erst nach einem Lizenzdownload kommt man in den Genuss des Films.

Hierzu muss man die DVD mit der WMV Version in das DVD Laufwerk einlegen. Dann einen Proxy Server ( hier sind einige aufgeführt: http://www.publicproxyservers.com ) im Media Player oder im Internet Explorer eintragen. Danach die Datei "dvdrun.exe" der DVD ausführen. Nun im Microsoft MediaPlayer auf > Datei > Öffnen gehen und auf der DVD die Datei "common\win\lang\en\t2x\esource\CHAP_0.ASX " (am Beispiel der T2 Extreme Edition) öffnen. Im sich daraufhin öffnenden Lizenzfenster nur noch auf die Bestätigung klicken, dann steht dem Filmgenuss nichts mehr im Wege.

ANMERKUNG: Sollte es Probleme bei der Anwahl eines geeigneten Proxy Servers geben, schafft der WM Player Bugfix "KB822620" (WindowsMedia9-KB822620-x86-DEU.exe) Abhilfe. Dieser kann auf der Microsoft Homepage heruntergeladen werden.

Es gibt neben den Microsoft HD DVDs auch viele HD Trailer (oder vom TS Format ins WMV Format encodierte Filme), die diesen Lizenzschutz natürlich nicht besitzen. Wie Ihr diese Dateien abspielen könnt und andere Tipps erfahrt Ihr hier.

Translation: It is not so easy as it seems playing HD-DVDs with the WMV Format. First You have to have a fast machine (3.0 GHz/9500 Radion or above). Second the Disc with the WMV 9 has a license protection. After a license download You can play Your movie.

For this You must inlay first Your disc. Then choose a public server ( http://www.publicproxyservers.com ) There are many listed. Enter one in Media Player or Internet Explorer. Then start the dvdrun.exe of the disc. Open now in the MediaPlayer the file "common\win\lang\en\t2x\esource\CHAP_0.ASX " (example is Your Disc T2 Extrem Edition).

Then a licensing window should open. Click ok and the movie should play. If You have troubles download the bugfix "KB822620". Hope this helps You...


@all: This is only for the first HD-WMV-Discs. The new ones have there own Keygen on the disc. Maybe we can build a decrypter out of that ... :D

Is there any info as to when other releases could be coming out? It's nice to see this coming out, even though it is IMHO a pretty terrible film.

Also, why are some people so reluctant to see WM9 DVDs come out? At the moment there simply is no other legal way for those of us in Europe to get HD material, and surely this should be encouraged. We realise that these do not adhere to any HD standard, but that is hardly MS's fault seeing as the standard isn't yet finalised. It's nice to at least have something while we wait. And all these are coming as add-ons to DVD releases.

As for quality, I agree that XviD provides better quality for 1-2 CD DVDRips, but in my tests WM9 provides better quality for HD stuff.

Take my copy of T2 Extreme. I bought it in the US, watched it in the US (well part of it) but as soon as I tried to watch it here in good ol' Euro land... I'm buggered!

M$'s copyright protection, will also require any future standalone devices to be internet capable. ie: monitoring your viewing habits. Well I don't know about you but I don't want to support this kind of 'big brother' activity.

Sure, I'm interested in HiDef technology and how M$ is developing theirs. Sure I will most probably buy the Tomb Raider Boxed set - but only because it's Europe's first official M$ HD disc. However, after this purchase I will not be supporting M$'s version of HiDef technology.

On a different note, we do have HiDef TV in Europe. It's called Euro1080 and is available via satellite from Astra 1 at 19.2E. And provided you have the correct equipment you will be able to view it.

Other forum members will have to confirm whether or not the Euro1080 has begun encrypting yet. But it is the policy of the broadcaster/content provider to offer this channel on an pan-european basis. Which is a good start!

Yeah, I'm aware that Euro1080 is offering HD broadcasts, but AFAIK they don't really have much in the way of content yet. Certainly no films, right?

As for the DRM, yes I know they made a fiasco of the T2 release (I was going to buy it myself, but didn't because of that), but to be entirely fair to them, that was largely Artisan's fault, as they are the ones who wanted a stringent DRM scheme. MS's DRM has worked very well on their other HD release from what I hear. That's more a point of implementation than principle I think. Does anyone have any info as to how the DRM scheme works on the Tomb Raider 2 release?

Some here seem to object merely to the fact that it's a MS codec on the disc, which seems a little silly really.

And how about info on other upcoming films? Any at all?

we'll see what they've done to the IT world repeated in the form of dead culture. we'll see viewing habits monitored, research into better codecs going ignored, and even more anticompetitive and consumer hostile activity in the entertainment industry.

microsoft have simply spotted another growth industry, and are trying to get a toehold. if they succeed, they might just get into the movie studios themselves. would you like to see Microsoft controlling distribution of films? if that were to happen, there'd simply be no room left for cultural advancement, with the bottom-line profitability margins determining what films get made and what films are ignored. that already happens to an unacceptable extent with the current studios, but microsoft have proven to be far more aggressive than even the MPAA when it comes to getting what they want.

Thats the way I think the encryption in TR2 works:

First the autorun.inf is started.
It starts start.hta
This script search for the key.
in the wmds.ini is a part of the key. (I think the basic)
This ini runs licgen.exe which generates the key.
This key will be written to the drm folder of XP.
The key runs exactly one month.
After that a new key will be generated.
And so on and so on...
NO INTERNET IS NEEDED.

My first post here, I've been lurking for a while though :)

Just quickly - Thankyou Doom9 for a great resource, I've found the forums to be very professionally coordinated and the site to be packed full of great information, I hope it continues on into the future.

Ok back on topic - Yes lets support the Bond standard, you've already brainwashed me (: Remember with mongrelsoft, they start small like a virus and then spread throughout like a cancer. If we're going to have any controll over this at all, we have to start now and educate people. Only like this can we stem the spread and hopefully persuade users to vote with their pockets and say no to MS-DRM or anyone else that wants to implement a standard that will undoubtedly be invasive and a threat to personal privacy.

I hate to enter a new forum on such a touchy political subject, but this I can see impacting all of us in ways that will not be pleasant at all. Too many times do we try to shut the gate once the horse has bolted :(
