I hear tons of people on this forum saying that they like Vegas Video better than Premiere. Right now I have Vegas 4.0 and Premiere 6.5, and to me that Premiere seems alot more professional and intuitive. I just cant get used to Vegas at all, but I wish I could because of its realtime color correction. If they had that for Premiere, I wouldn't use anything else. I know that Premiere Pro does have realtime color correction, but my computer doesn't have SSE or some crap like that.

So I guess my original question was, what version of Vegas are you guys using that you like so much?

4 or 5...
They are basically the same as far as video editing is concerned. 5 just added a bunch of stuff like 3d compositioning and stuff :\

I was working with vegas for a couple months, but like you I just couldn't get the hang of it, and I've moved on to Premiere Pro. I like it a LOT better.

I think Premiere has more realistic editing methods. Ones that you would see in an editing room. I really do need Premiere Pro, but to get that, I need a whole new computer. Oh well, I need to upgrade from my old Celron 533 anyway.

Maybe I should switch to Mac and get Final Cut Pro. lol.

I use both Vegas 4 and Premiere Pro...i've been working at a tv studio for 9 years and i prefer vegas over premiere pro...vegas offers better audio mixing capabilities not to mention it's strong directX plug-in support, which premiere does not, it has better dynamic motion control, it offers scripting, edit details for logging and 24pa support (24PA support will be available in Premiere Pro 1.5). the editing style is somewhat different and gets getting used to but i've been using vegas since version 1 so im very used to it - it's better to have 2 monitors. it's all about preference

plus Vegas 4 works well with my digi001 Pro Tools system

Maybe I should switch to Mac and get Final Cut Pro The only valid reason to get a Mac  ;)

I have FCP at work and at some points it just offers you a little more opportunities than Premiere Pro (like easy masking of parts of the picture, easy moving around of layers in the preview window etc.)

I used Vegas for a year now and tested Premiere and will never do that again. Vegas is something that i feel home with, not mention all the support for directX plugins etc.

I used Acid PRo for 3years now and it has the same interface so to understand Vegas wasnt so hard for me.

Maybe its just a "what you grew up with" sort of thing.

That's just the same with Avid users! Nobody with a clear mind and knowledge of what good NLE progs are out there today would still use AVID LOL ;)

I just found out that there's already a version 5 of Vegas. Yeah, just came out of my cave the past few days. So who here has tried its supposedly new compositing features? I wanted to try the trial version but all the registration process is such a pain. Anybody played with the new features to a considerable stretch?

i work in video production, used premiere since v4.0 for long years

now with vegas, premiere looks PRIMITIVE. vegas is much more direct, fast editing and able to do much more things.

iīve tested premiere pro, they just f**k premiere. now, never will be the same. so, maybe in premiere 9 i come back for it.

vegas 5 has bugs, wait for 5b, 5c... better use 4e for now.

Agreed. I also like Vegas' simple interface as compared to Premiere Pro's, I used to do my editing on previous Premiere versions (6 - 6.5) and when I switched to Vegas the crossover wasn't really painful. So in response to the thread poster's earlier question: I like Vegas version 4(e) and it's what I'm using now, maybe in due time I'll upgrade to later revisions of version 5.

vegas 5 has good news, but , anyone will want more.

for example, i like vegas 5 with twice transitions, and filters :)

i like:

the audio downmix preview(editing in 5.1)
better look :)
insert time funcion
more responsive (is mor fast the play-stop, drag process, less delay)

swf import (sometimes i need)
film style 5.1 panning (older sucks)
easy reverse event

now is wait for stable version. 5 crashed many times with me, in sony forum a lot of people are posting bugs... and are a lot...

the only thing i like about premiere pro is that you can import your project files into Adobe After Effects, you cant do that with Vegas, plus your Premiere markers from also imported, which makes it real easy in AE

The stuff I didn't like about Vegas was that it shows thumbnails all over the video tracks, and this severely slows it down. If you disable the thumbnails it also disables the wavform view. Also, you dont hear the audio when you scrub over the timeline like you do in Premiere. When I edit I do a lot of synching to the audio, and I makes lots of small cuts really close together, and Premiere, is so much more efficient at something like this. For more general purpose editing though, Vegas is really great.

the tumbnail preview is slow if u have a slow hd. mine is ultra fast.. :) (2 sata hd - raid0)

vegas do not have a "scrub", but the JKL keys works much better :)
