I have purchased this from dvdasia and have it coming in the next few days, naturally i want to make a back-up. Know Ive heard that this version contains no subtitle stream for english subs when there is only Japanese speaking. The only subtitles there are are full english.

Does anyone know if it is possible to edit the subtitles so that they only appear through Japanese dialog?

Any help please?

Yeah, find the English subs when the talk only Japanese and have them forced start.

Well... watch the movie and write down the times they speak Japanese Only. Locate the matching subs for those times and Force Start them. In the Data Editor tab of Scenarist, locate the sub(s) and click on them. In center lower box it'll have the info for the subpicture, filename, etc. Put a check mark in the box that says "Forced Start". And that's all.

I have a similiar problem I can't figure out.

I bought both the US and then bought the Japan version when I found out the House of BLues scene was in full color.

Problem is I want the subtitle from the US version on the Japanese version, since in the Japan version Englis subs are allways on. In the US version they only come on when Japanese dialog starts.

And I can't simply replace and reauthor, because the japanese version has a few extra minutes of footage that will throw off the US subs if I insert them.

This may be more trouble then it's worth. Any ideas?

Could anyone please be so kind as to post the chapter stop celltimes for this DVD? When I extract them using ifoedit in accordance with the tutorials I've read, I get settings for the 40 cells when there is only 24 chapters for the movie.

well all You need is BOTH versions of the DVD!
- than do it manually for each sub individually

As there are only around 150 subtitles, this can be done in a few hours.

The same for the chapters, only 18 chapters or so are not too much to handle!


I know what I am talking about! - I have the european and the japanese Version (already with matching german audio) and I did a 2CD SVCD conversion with permanent subtitles (for the japanese parts only)!
This all only took one weekend from DVD-extraction to SVCD burning!

It's quite some work though - but this movie is worth it :o)

Well I'll also do a DVD version, but this may be more tricky since in this 'special' DVD version the subtitles are not matching and the chapters are wrong... and complete reauthoring with all that extra stuff takes a bit
But if you guys have the original japanese version, this allready is there!
Just extract the subs from both versions and delete anything from the jap. version whats not on the english DVD.
As this is the advanced forum here, I guess you know very well how to do all this...

I did my backup using the japanese version only.
I just used SubRip to convert the subs to bmp, opened each sub and deleted the ones that weren't needed (the Japanese speaking parts are in italics, but be warned so are the voiceovers) then deleted all the corresponding references to the deleted subs in the .sub file (which was easy because they are all numbered). It sounds like alot of work but only took a couple of hours.

Or should i go with ripping the subs and then deleting the other bits.
