high bitrate one pass vs. medium bitrate multipass

I have a question, I noticed a one pass CBR of bitrate 6,000 produces very good results, and is very time efficient...

However, I wanted to know, would I get better results out of a multipass under any two comparisons???

For example: would I get better quality from a multipass @ 6000 kbps compared to a single pass at 6000 kbps?

I figure at somebiterate it wouldn't matter if I use multipass or not?? Like if I encoded a DVD @ 7500 kbps, I wouldn't need a multipass?

Even at 7500 you are not hitting the max - there might be a scene or two that is really bitrate hungry and looks better at 9400 kbit.

So in theory at least, there is a quality benefit to multipass if you encode at below the max bitrate you'd use for VBR.

The only time you can say for sure that CBR will give better results then VBR is if the CBR is very close to the max bitrate, assuming that the VBR is any good, of course. With CCE it is.

im new and just want to know one thing.
How can i figure out what the max bitrate is??
is it for the most DVD about 9800??

Don't quote me on this, but I believe the max bitrate for DVDs is 10 mbit for audio and video. That or 9800...

DVD max is 10080, but unless I'm mistaken the max for the video stream alone is 9800.

Of course, seldom would it be possible to use a max video bitrate of 9800 and stay within DVD spec, because the audio/subpicture streams would usually exceed 280.
