Ive seen this recently at a bunch of online stores claiming that it will be upgradeable via firmware to burn dual layer +r9 discs. Is this something that is for real or just a gimmic to get us to buy it.

Its pretty cheap so its tempting.

Benq have officially said that they will be offering a FREE firmware upgrade for this drive which makes it dual layer capable. The update will be available on 30/09/2004, which means that by then there will have been dual layer drives out for quite a while.

So this is a good one to get if you absolutely must buy one now, however if you can wait another 2-3 weeks, then other drives (like the Benq 830, NEC 2510, Liteon 832, etc..) will be available which have dual layer support immediately.

Of course there's still no indication as to when dual layer media will become available, and how much it will cost...

Of course is there an indication about dual layer media prices...even a pretty precise and exorbitant (http://www.clubic.com/n/n12215.html) one:
5000 Yen, 39 Euro, 50 Dollars
