What's the framerate? That's NTSC resolution so fps shoudl be 29.97.

Does the file include audio? I haven't used the programs you mentioned, but as a general rule the video and audio streams are imported separately. Try demuxing using TMPGEnc, for example and them importing the elementary streams.

Thanks for your suggestion . Im kind of new to this . Do you know wheres theres a good guide for demuxing ? The frame rate is correct the problem ois neither program will open the mpg files

In tmpgenc:

file, mpeg tools, simple demultiplex

Also bear in mind that mp2 audio is not DVD compliant for NTSC (although many authoring apps and most players will handle it). PCM audio is compliant but is too large. AC3 is the way to go IMO, if you have a commercial encoder like Soft Encode, say.

They both are really low-quality programs with very limited capabilities. Try instead TMPEnc DVD Author (http://www.pegasys-inc.com/en/download/tda.html). It's very reliable and easy to use.

Once you get comfortable with that, you may try capturing to AVI and then encoding it to MPEG-2. This potentially allows for better quality and smaller MPEG files if you do it right, but it takes enormous amount of time. On a regular computer, it could take five to ten times longer than the actual movie. There is a lot of stuff to learn about encoding, too.

Got a coy of Tmpgnec dvd authoer 1.5 . When I add the mpeg I created I get an error that the combined bit rate of audio and video exceeds the amount of the dvd standard . I captured the video as mprg2 (in win dvr) but I dont remember what I did for the audio . What would be the correct way to capture it , or would you recommend a different capture program . Im using win xp with a 2.something g pentium 4 . Thanks again
By the way I have several encoding program among them cce2.5 What would you recommend using as I havent tried any of them yet.

You can check your MPEG file in TMPGEnc. Go to File - MPEG Tools - De-multiplex. When you open your file, it'll show all the streams with corresponding bitrate and resolution. Normally, you would expect something like this:
MPEG-2 Video 720x480 29.97fps 8000kbps
MPEG-1 Audio Layer-2 48000Hz 224kbps

If you have higher video bitrate or PCM audio, you might have to adjust your capture settings so that the total bitrate is below 9800kbps. Correct audio types for NTSC are PCM and AC-3, but MPEG audio works on most of the players.

CCE is a good encoding program, save it for later.

Thanks Dimmer . I have one last question . What would you recommend as a good capture program I imagine there may be a good one to capture mpeg2 and a different one which would work better to capture in avi . I have many good programs , flyds, iuvcr , virtualvcr ,and I have huffy uv etc. Of course I dont know how to really use them so If possible maby you could save me lots of trial , error and headaces ,

Capturing AVI is simpler, so there is a number of equally good programs for that. VirtualDub comes to mind first. When selecting a capturing program for MPEG, you have to watch for:
- Available video settings: resolution, bitrate;
- Available audio format settings including sampling frequency and bitrate;
- Quality of the output (i.e. quality of the encoder);
- Audio sync - this is a major issue with different programs on different systems.

You want to be sure that the program provides flexible capture settings. Very simple programs often only have the settings like Good, Better, Best, so you're not in control. Some even offer AC-3 sound capture, but it's not a good format for editing.

As for myself, I use ATI capturing software that came with my Radeon card. Of course, it took numerous patches and upgrades to make it work properly. You should check Capture forum for more info.
